Lesson 1 - how to demotivate your staff

A friend of my got an e-mail from his boss telling all staff because the company didn't hit profit margins set for the year no bonuses will be given.......then the boss turns up in his brand new Lambo Gallardo !

They only have about 10 staff which i think makes it much worse.

what are some people like !?!?

What goes around comes around. Demotivated staff = poor performance = lambo for sale this time next year

I don't know about that. We haven't had a payrise [across the board] for two years, yet the MD has a fleet of Bentleys [well 2 anyway]. He spends £250 a week on petrol. Yet he can't afford his staff an inflationary payrise at the very least?

Oh well :D

We're also getting nothing 'cos they're trying to build the company up to make it more profitable. We have to settle for a performance related sliding scale.

Funny how all the directors got new high-wage contracts though...

I have a great tale.. previous company, new boss turns up after we're all expecting great things after the company has been taken over, how hes gonna shake things up and improve the shambles of a team and working conditions..

His main point.. if you dont like it, leave.

It was a sad day.

I got told last month

"If you go under a bus tomorrow, our company is screwed.

Now get a succession plan in place!"

Still no mention at all of a pay rise though...

i'd be more worried why he said that - i'd stay away from buses if i was you...

I worked for bosses for well over two decades.

Then an opportunity arose for me to start a company .

I had a utopian view of employment.

Example "Hey guys the company will front some money for lunch"

Reply "is that all ,that won't pay for it!"

OK so have nothing.

I have done weekends away for staff at company expense , including spouses and girlfriends.

I have paid for staff holidays......abroad

We have had Christmas Dinners at the "Landmark" with stretch Limos.

(for those outside London the Landmark is serious 5 star)

We have had trips to the theatre with a meal.

we have had meals ...some serious

I have "empowered" staff to give meaning and purpose to their job.

I pay Christmas Bonus whether the company has the money or not.

I occasionally throw in some "lifestyle" money when someone goes on holiday so they can have a moment they otherwise would not have had on holiday.

(IE a restaurant or a trip)

I ran a bonus scheme of enormous generosity which was "worked " in such a way that it cost the company a small fortune. The "troops" worked the production to just 40p an hour more than was needed to trigger the bonus.

God ..they were good at it.

I gave above average wage rises for years and years.Mainly because inflation has never been what this government says it is.

Not this year cos once you have given it you cannot ungive it even if the turnover drops.

I have just spent £5k on the restroom so people can get away from their work places.

I have just refurbished the toilets and shower room.

I am having fitted an enormously expensive set of extraction fans to keep the temperature down.

are they Motivated?

Nah!!

As I am now (just like Animal Farm) fully transformed into a Boss I can assure you that NOTHING will motivate some people except fear.

I never looked for a job after the age of 22.

I would take a job that paid less money if it were more interesting.

I would work all the hours necessary to complete my work and responsibilities as I saw them. If I didnt get money ....what "motivated" me?

To be the best. To do the job to the very best of my ability.( the same rule is applying to the Supra!)

To earn the money from this company I have and ,sometimes still do, work 14 days at a time.I work weekends ,nights bank holidays etc.

My reward......45 days cruising a year......(55 next year)

A Supra which when done will be one of the best in the country.....

A "comfortable" lifestyle.

Before you knock the bosses look at their risks.

You never miss what you never had. I would miss not being able to spend money.

If any thing happened to the company....another couple of West End bombs might do it....then I would lose "everything"

My motivation now? Fear of losing what I have worked for.

So now I make sure everybody gets paid, make sure everybody remains in employment, make sure that I/they have a future.

and if to ensure that ..I have a "Gordon Ramsey" moment then I will continue to have them.

As for the "theres the door" incident.

NO-one but NO -one here would call my bluff on that one.

I would work till I dropped rather than back down. If people don't want to work for me ......leave ...its a free world.

What do I think they want?...a job ...regular....safe ....for the most money with the least aggro for the least effort.

Bottom line.....the people who work for me are ALL entirely capable of owning their own companies, entirely capable of making the money for a Gallardo,

and the reason they don't?

self motivation.

I totally agree with that, there is a lot of sh1t that goes along with running a co. Its amazing how many people purport they know how to do it better, but strangely never take the plunge.

There was a sig on here that said it well (Tannhauser?) = "How much easier is it to be critical than correct"

we seem to get 2.5% a year.our company just had a 10 million managegment buy out.all they concerned is saving money buy using cheap materiels which take longer to get through machines and you waste loads.but they look at it as saving money.its like you keep telling them about things to save time and they never listen so you get to a stage and think why bother.

I totally agree with you and it is a very easy situation for "management " to get into. Unless they are from the shop floor they can be a bit dense.

The people we do business have been through a similar process, relevant to their industry. I have had meetings with my contacts and discussed how it will cost managements more long term.

Even as we speak quality is returning because to do the job properly is cheaper ,long term, than to do it badly. It has taken 4 years.

If you feel the way you do you must put it into writing. With figures. and follow your report through the command chain.

The 10 Mill. had to come from somewhere and my guess is,if its a buy out its borrowed from future profits which must be maximised to pay the debt.

If you can "show" the savings that can be made even the thickest boss will change.........and hijack your ideas like they were their own but hey thats life....

good luck

Pump Gas Pete, not having owned and run my own business i can not judge.

However, from an employees point of view if all year round you have put 110% into your work working all hours etc..and also under the false illustion of being encouraged in your quarterly one to ones that if you continue to work hard you'll be rewarded etc.. then have your hopes crushed by a simple cold e-mail confirming no bonuses will be giving and then seeing your boss turn up in a £130k + car is not very tactfall - do you not agree ?

There are now 10 employees who I genuinly believe would have been knocked back and would have lost respect for their boss. I appreciate some people are never happy but I believe even a £1,000 bonus per person would have been enough to please most people. For someone who can afford to purchase a £130k+ car i think £10k is not alot of money to 'invest' in your staff.

I totally agree if you take all the risks and deal with great stress of running your own company then yes you should reward yourself with all the pleasure in life, i certainly would, but you must treat your staff how you would want to be treated yourself.

Lets face it a company is only as good as its workers.

Yep, I could not agree more.

After a while the boss finally separates the "company money" from his own money. He can be rich and the company poor.

If he has worked his way up to a new car and has part exed his , for example,an 80k Porker then he has "only " spent 50k of which 30 may be over ,say ,three years.

In which case he has "only" spent 20k. Would you if you were in his position pay out 15k to the staff? (Tax and employers contribution)

It could be he's an arsehole that has spent the investment money, tax money,

VAT and next years profit on the car in which you have my sympathy.

My work colleague Graeme who will become "famous" on these pages worked for another company before joining us.

He was convinced the boss was making a fortune. Convinced!!

When that company was sold it had so many debts the sale price just covered them and the "Rich Boss" went to work for someone.

I am NOT saying you should not feel hard done by but........

I've said my bit on bosses.
