Branners
If you are on 2mb on NTL then they are going to upgrade you to 4mb for free by the end of June. If anybody calls them and they will do it quicker than that let me know as I would like to upgrade to 4mb as well. They are also upping the upload speed to 400k and the download limits are being removed. full details here http://www.ntlworld.com/helpsupport/alerts/broadband_upgrade_3may_2006.php JB
Bobbeh
Upload to 400k a sec? or 400kbps? Im still not getting my full speed here. Uploads never up to 512kbps and downloads never over 750k a sec, which is not 10mbit. Still, quick enough for me
Whitesupraboy2
Uploads never up to 512kbps impossible to get on ADSL highest you can get is 400Kbps, the technology wont allow a higher speed. You'll need SDSL to get a higher upload speed mate

chilli
slight side issue but remotely related. If you are on Nildram ADSL2 512kbps or 2mbps they are doing free regrade to 8mbps, mines being switched over on the 9th, hope the router can cope! JamesG
4Mbit will be pretty cool. Thanks for the info. Now, if only they would get a move on with a hi-def TV service!

Branners
NTL is cable ABTW they are planning to sack 1/3 of their workers due to taking over Telewest and Virgin Mobile and outsourcing to India. This will be announced Tuesday according to BBC News. it was in one of the financial papers today. Their service was crap before, its gonne get really bad now while they sort it all out. THe one saving grace is that Virgin like to be proud of their products (might not always work out but its what they try to do) so that might just save the service. Pete
My Teleworst connection went from 2Mb to 4Mb the other week. Can't say I've noticed much...but then I'm not downloading copious amounts of movies, games and crap. Most people I know that were on 4Mb and got upgraded to 10Mb are switching back down to 4Mb as they're not using the bandwidth and would rather make the saving. In fact one chap reckons his server can't handle the full download speed to transfer files quick enough to his hard drive - which I find a bit odd. It's a fairly high spec P4 too, but as he is one of my technical staff I don't disbelieve him.
chilli
10mb? that must be ADSL 2 then since ADSL 1 only goes up to 8mbps, or are teleworst providing a cable service?

smithaldo
Im on the NTL 10mb connection and my download times have improved a hell of a lot. So nice being able to get something done quickly and not have to wait x amount of hours
Bobbeh
I'm on Telewest 10Mb. Reliable but not close to 10mb performance... especially upload But you were never said to be getting 10mbit upload, only download. Uploads are/were restricted on NTL to 512kbps (70k a sec). carl0s
I'm interested in the increased upstream bandwidth. Do they still have restrictions against running services on known ports such as 21, 25 and 80? I run an SMTP service for incoming mail, VPN and http on 80, but I'm currently with Demon ADSL. I'd need a static IP too.
Homer
Bobbeh, I heard from quite a few people on NTL that the speeds vary a fair bit dependant on area and number of subscribers. Where I am there's almost no ntl BB subscribers so I can always reach 1.15MB/sec from sites that have sufficient bandwidth. A mate of mine in an area with a much higher number of subscribers says he has never seen above 900kb/sec even on a good day. Same goes for people with ADSL, its all about subscriber numbers & distance from exchange. Carlos, MY IP address only changes about once every 6-9 months which is quite nice too I've not noticed any restrictions on any ports when running any services. My BB usage is around 200gb/month
