Converting to VVTI

Hi,

I'm own a 1996 Supra TT 6-speed manual. I'm hoping to swap to a later engine. My current choice is a VVTI version.

Are there 6 speed manual VVTI and Tiptronic VVTI version ? How many version are there ?

Upon doing the conversion there could be an issue around the transmission shift stick area. Is that true ? or is it just plug and play ?

Any advise is greatly appreciated.

Hi

Yes , you can get 6 speed manual VVTI and Tiptronic versions.

Can't imagine there would be an issue around the transmission shift stick area.

You would have to get a VVTI ECU aswell.

I can't imagine why you would want to do this anyway, the VVTI engine gives you a little more power and low down torque. But I think I would spend the money elsewhere - single turbo (600 bhp) , much easier to get the parts and much more satisfying! :)

Not as simple as that....

The VVTI uses a different ECU system, and as such you need the looms, I swapped the dash looms as well because there was some subtle differences with that as well...

So it is a dash out job in order to do it as well...

Without sounding funny, but if you have a TT6 why go through all this effort to put in a VVTI, and to then put in a tiptronic?

Yeah, the tiptronic is nice, but a manual to auto conversion?? different I suppose..

Good luck

Thank for the reply guys :)

My engine and the rest of it's drive accessories are pretty old now from wear and tear thru the years. Swapping a new and later one will eliminate all worries.

The conversion is by transferring everything from a VVTI "Half-cut" into mine. I would also get the "Rear-Cut" as well. Nothing will be left out.

I'll set off with the manual VVTI then :)

As others have already told you, the VVTi engine is nice and better in many ways to the older 2JZ-GTE engines but converting an older one to VVTi is a lot of work.

If you really want to do it I have a spare VVTi wiring loom (Everything from the engine and gearbox through to the ECU) and an ECU for a 6sp manual VVTi which I could sell to you.

Jake, sorry but i dont get what you meant :search:

I'm not converting my existing engine to VVTI. When i mean "half-cut" is i'm purchasing the middle half portion of a VVTI supra. I'll special order it to make sure the floorboard carpet and wiring harnesses are not cut off.

Okay, lets put it in context...

The ECU is very different... the pinouts are not even nearly the same, so you will require the engine loom to go to the ECU.

The Dash is different due to some extra gauges, so you will probably need both the dash looms...

The rear looms are subtly different in that the facelift has got some side running lights, not a major a thing, but it will show you difference between the cars... I can tell you that the door looms are the same as mine plugged straight in.

Think carefully, you are probably better off taking your engine out and rebuilding it with new parts... much easier

Thanks for the input Phoenix-One, and also the tip for the door =)

If I decide buying the halfcut, I'll make sure I do a complete transfer from car to car.

At the end of the day it still depends on how friendly the pocket is :D
