Conrad
Ok so my car tax ran out at the end of Feb. I kept meaning to tax it for the month of March then April but never got round to it. I'm definitely going to tax it this month but was wondering if I can back date the tax two months to avoid a fine? I'm sure I heard you can do this... If not, anyone on here been fined by the new tax computer system and aware of how much my fine will be?
Jake
I haven't taxed my bike for over two years. The last time I did tax it it was 8 months out of date but they renewed it no problem. Didn't need to back-date it.
how_supra
From the DVLA website "The registered keeper of an unlicensed vehicle could be fined a minimum of £1000.In addition to this, you will either be required to purchase a licence or declare SORN, pay arrears of duty accrued whilst the vehicle was unlicensed and pay a penalty of £80"
tinkerbell
you dont need to back date it, but the fine will be £80 if you get done by the comp system:)

Not keen on the minimum fine of £1000 though! at least there's a could before that quoted fine!

Kip
sorry to hijack, but on the subject of road tax, I had to tax mine at the end of April to begin May OK so far. Went to the post office to tax it four days early, made out the cheque for £170 as stated on the renewal/invoice notice. Only to be told it's gone up to £175, so as I said but I have the renewal notice which clearly states £170 not £165 or £175 but £170 and that's what I shall pay - only to be told that the PO have had a memo round for oiks like me that bring this into question - refer to the DVLA - which I was told could take weeks, would sir like a SORN. How pissy was I How can they get away with it when it quite clearly stated I had to pay £170?? Sorry for hijack and rant over.
Daston
Do you have to pay for a SORN as I dont think I can afford the MOT and Tax on my car this month so would rather take it off the road for 2 weeks and do some work on it and pay the tax next month. Ian W
no, i don't think you have to pay anything for a SORN.
Angarak
Declaring your car SORN is free (until the Labour Gov need more money). It is automatically declared back on the road when you go to TAX it. You can now tax your car online, but it costs more (since they have to post the tax disc to you).

They charge extra if you use a credit card, with a debit card it's just the standard charge of £175.00 (or whatever).
Jiversteve
If you track back through threads you will find that I was stopped by DVLA who argued that my car was untaxed despite the fact that I had a tax disk and the receipt from the post office for the payment. When I phoned DVLA they had the car registered to me but listed as not taxed????? So the other week I went off to the post office, tax disk in hand, and renewed tax no problem. I have yet to check with DVLA to see if they have got it right this time. Interestingly, and I was up for the fight if they did, they did not decide to send me a letter, demand for tax, or a fine, despite their claim they do it all automatically. The system seems to have holes in it!
