Take ALL your docs (mot, tax, insurance, log book) to the licensing office. They'll take them off you (and the money) and send you replacement ones with the new number about 10 days later.

Edit to add:

Take cash. IIRC they don't take credit/debit cards

Find your local licensing office here: http://www.dvla.gov.uk/local/lo_map.htm

What do i need to take the cash for if i have payed for the transfers ? also i was told to get a v55 form and send it somwhere ...

i've done this a few times now. its a lot quicker if you go to the local DVLA office. just take all your docs as Jake said, and cash..
