Is 80mph now ignored by motorway police?

I passed a police BMW sat at the side of the motorway this morning. He was side on to the flow of traffic and pointing a radr gun out of the window.

I was in traffic (actually about three cars) and doing 80 max with one car falling back and the other gaining on me.

Yet the copper didn't pull out after any of us.

Would he have been waiting for someone to be going a fair bit faster?

That depends on the type of gun doesn't it? Think with the hand held radar guns they have to stop you at the time if it doesn't take a picture of you.

ACPO Guidelines are 10% + 2mph so on a M-way 79mph, so if you were doing an indicated 80 you'll be fine. And no they don't HAVE to stop you at the time, they can report you on index but its not good practice to do so.

Not good practice. Are you allowed to say why?

Lucky escape then Martin

I guess so. Having said that I drove to Envy and back this morning and I have to say that, in hindsight, I drove like a complete prat at times. Been a bit lucky today and will now be driving like a saint.

Saw a Ferrari pulled over as well.

i was driving home last night and as i passed over a motorway bridge i noticed a police van with a strange set up....

three seperate cameras, one sitting over each lane with a copper behind the middle one (checking it).... his van was parked off the side of the bridge so you coould hardly see it.

i just thought to myself that if that isnt a money making scheme what is? and on a bank holiday friday when the roads are extra busy  never seen him there before....

i was going to stop and take a picture to post / warn ... cheeky dirty filthy grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr ... i better stop talking now! ITS JUST ANOTHER BLOODY TAX!

im getting to the point that there is no point in owning a fast car ... all you do is pay road tax on it... fuel tax, tyres, parts , labour ... keeping a mini economy of garages open and as soon as you get on the road your f**ked by money making scams.. grrrrrrr

No offence mate. But the speed limit is there for a reason. You shouldnt break it. If your prepared to do the crime then you have to be prepared to do the time.

You own a fast car for how quickly you can reach the speed limit not how fast you can go, unless on a track.

Ill be off to go and **** myslef now ;)

i can understand a speed limit outside a school or in a town and im not saying everyone should drive at 100 miles per hour (i dont) but to use the speed limit as a money making scheme is wrong....

we have loads of speed cameras here and i mean loads i pass 3-4 before i can get to the motorway 4 miles(ish) and not a single one is outside a school etc ... half the problem is walkers and kids being to lazy to walk the extra 10 feet to push and wait at a crossing .... or there not being a crossing there.... (another thing that gets me is people pushing their kids across the road meters from a crossing) .....

its my time of the month :)

Well I was trundling down the M4 last night in my rangey at an indicated 80 ish at 4am and a marked possibly area car but could have been traffic was the only car to overtake me in half an hour and he drifted past me I reckon just sub-ton with no blues or two's. Probably as a rule of thumb I would say its down to road conditions, how you appear to be in control of what type of vehicle, and dare I say what mood the individual sat in the car is in.

Its not 100% correct to say that you can travel at over 70mph and it being legal to do so. 71mph is an illegal speed on the UK motorway.

The only reason they allow cars to do the 10%+2mph speeds is purely to give the courts sufficient proof that you are actually speeding. And because their speed measuring equipment can only be callibrated to a certain degree of accuracy in the first place.

There are some police forces who still try to 'do' you for doing 1mph over the limit. Many of these cases are thrown out of court due to the lawyers saying that can not prove their equipment was measuring to that accuracy.

But I'd be very careful in overtaking a police car if it was sat at 70mph.
