Sorry to hear this mate, hope thigns are looking up now. Is he insured?

Epilepsy can be controlled really well, my sister has it following a severe head trauma and she hasn't had a fit for years now. I know she's not a dog (well, arguable) but I'm sure the science is similar.

Bad news I'm afraid,

Sam had to be put to sleep at about 10 am this morning.

Still coming to terms with losing such a fantastic dog/member of our family and we appreciate every one of the comments on this thread, it means alot.

He was kept under sedation but we got a call at 8am this morning saying that Sam had taken a turn for the worse and several types of drug/possible causes had been followed through with no success in controlling further fits.

The only way of calming him was to sedate further, it seemed that if this was aloud to wear off then he would fit again. If this was aloud to happen the odds are that he would have died through his body not being able to cope.

The vet came to the conclusion that the chances of it being the worse case scenario of a tumour looked more likely and he wouldn't recover.

With his advice and with Sam's best interests in mind we let him go while still under sedation to prevent anything else happening to him.

Always the most difficult thing to do and we miss him like mad.

All we can do is remember the good times and his funny little ways, plenty of them as he was such a great character.

I'll find a picture or two as requested earlier, he was gorgeous looking and a pleasure to have him share his life with us.

God bless mate, we love you.

Paul,

that's awful news, I had just read the whole post and it seemed to be getting more and more promising as the thread went on. I'm really sorry to hear that an obviously loved member of the family has been lost.

I can honestly say I wouldn't know what to do if I were in your position. All the best wishes mate

Mike

Cheers for the comments, we would have done anything for Sam but it wasn't to be I guess.

Not really coping at the moment, been through it before but it never gets any easier believe me.

When 'Gemma' our other Rough Collie went 4 yrs ago we had Sam still to ease the pain a bit but now the house is 'empty':(

Really can't get to grips with the fact he has gone in such a short time. One thing is that we had last week off holiday and spent all the time with him which we and he enjoyed, glad we did this now.

Gutted for you :(

If it makes you feel any better that picture of him at the top of the stairs has made me laugh like a loon, he looks like he's in mid sentence there with his mouth open.

He looked a cracker.

He was soft as anything and so loyal and loving.

The other pic with his cushion, we got this from M&S pets about three years ago and it's meant for dogs.

Normal size cushion but he loved it, lined himself up when he laid down so he could rest his head on it! Best thing we ever got him.

I've already spoken to Paul via PM but would like to reassure everyone else that's got a dog that this horrible outcome is very uncommon. Most dogs that have epilepsy lead relatively normal lives often for many years.

Great pics Paul, and sorry again.

Thanks again Steve, as you say we had about three or four other routes we took first before ending up here, having spoke to several friends etc epilepsy is more common in dogs that I realised. As you say most can and do lead normal lives with treatment/drugs.

Our vet confirmed what you said above Steve, he was upset that it had come to this as he said other than the possible tumor/brain issue, Sam was such a healthy and well looked after dog and this wasn't the outcome he saw for him when first examining him yesterday.
