SupraStar 3000
I would like to say the one thing I am proud of is the English language. But judging by some of the spelling in this thread, I better not;) me?

JohnA
... yet they all come down here to work. If scotland is so fantastic why don't they sod off back there? ... Because that's where their tax money gravitates;) And yes, they do feel that the revenues from the North Sea oil should go to them (some silly theory about Aberdeen being part of Scotland or something...) So it isn't as straightforward as an argument, and that's without looking back at colourful historical events.
RedM
If anyone comes near me with a one of the flags they'll be picking bits of their arse for weeks. Fuck St. George, patriotsism, nationalism and most of all, the racism by stealth of it all.
lust2luv
I think it's amazing, for such a small island (+ a few bits) that Britain has had arguably the greatest effect on the World of any country. The amount of things invented by British people is incredible. Our language is the most ubiquitous on the planet. And take sports - the number invented by Brits is mindboggling (football, rugby, cricket, tennis, golf.. even baseball had British origins IIRC). Our main asset though I think is our sense of humour (hey, in a country with this weather and these politicians, you need it!) I recall Bill Bryson saying something about if you watch Brits having a conversation it's almost guaranteed that one will crack a smile or laugh without 10 seconds or so. I feel the humour on this forum is its no. 1 attribute. Just my 2p.

Supragal
What I hate about it is that whenever it's the World Cup people buy flags and stick them up in their windows and their cars and pretend they are patriotic for about a week until England are knocked out. Fuck St. George, patriotsism, nationalism and most of all, the racism by stealth of it all. I struggle with that logic. My country of birth is Wales. I am proud of that fact due to the heritage, my language and my culture. How on earth can that be construed as racist? I think you are blanketing all national patriotism with the stupidity and bigotry of certain far right factions who use it as a cloak for their own misguided and pathetic beliefs. We had a visitor from another British country who said: "I couldn't live here that fuc*ing thing is repulsive, I'd have it pulled down." Now who is being racist there? VELOCITY
I think it all gets a bit out of hand, Im Indian but was born in England, I still have pride for this country, but when I tell people that I am proud to live in this country and be born here I do get some very strange looks from some people? Compared to lots of other countries in this world this has to be one of the best and fairest in terms of living, freedom of speech etc.

Charlotte
Hmmmm interesting debate. I agree with CJ about the rascist thing, the BMP party and holding an English flag are two entirely different things. An observation from having Polish relatives is, everyone in this country has a chip on their shoulder of some sort. No one is thankful for anything. Go to Poland, see what they've lived through and they are grateful to have survived and are proud of their nation - despite its faults. Everything in this country is status orientated. Charlotte
Bit of a sweeping statement. Not all people are status led. Ok fairly large generalisation but my point is, how many people do the lottery every week, how many people are desperate for fame, how many people are trying to be something that they are not. I bet if we did a family fortunes style survey very few people would say they are happy with what they've got.
VELOCITY
Are we getting confused between being happy with what you have got, improving your life and being ambitious?
Mike
Yeah me to and when i see the St.George flag which is a shame Very sad... I saw something on the news yesterday (didn't hear what they were saying as in the gym with music on) saying the BNP are back on the rise again... then followed by what looked like lots of sound bites with people who looked like Vicky Pollard... god knows what they were saying, but I can imagine... to say it makes my blood boil would be a bit of an understatement... I would love one of their people to arrive on my doorstep...

I think a clean version of the BNP would be a success, something like the UKIP tried to be - but failed.
