lockys96
If i leave my car over 2 days without driving, the batterey seems to be going dead, and wont start. even if i leave it overnight and try to start in the morning it struggles and just starts. I think this may be down to my stereo in some way, its been in the car since i imported it, stuck on a radio band converter and was working fine, but now it isnt, as soon as you switch the radio on, it comes on loud for 1 second and then goes off, but if you turn the volume up to max, you can still make out the radio is working, and i dont have mute on, i spoke to my local car audio place and he said that a wire in the stereo could be earthing out, so i ripped the dash off to have a look, pulled out the stereo, check all the wires, taped some of them. and nothing has changed. aint got a clue whats happening, anyone else had anything similar? Thanks Si......
m_cozzy
Could be the batterys going. Mine struggled to start if left for a few days, starter motor running really slow. New battery from halfords sorted it, only about £55 pounds.

The standard one was £50 i think. I don't know if the prices vary from store to store or what! Got me some new terminal clamps while i was there too. JamieP
You leave your car unlocked? Mike in a locked garage that is blocked in by two cars, and i have two staffordshire bull terriers and a dog flap, the car is safe:D
MrRalphMan
Mine was flat tonight when I went to go to work. Been sitting locked/alarmed for 3 days.. Bugger. It seems to be fine it I either drive it every two days or have it locked but not alarmed. So I get to drive the wifes Mondeo... Yippy..
supRo
Get the alternator (could be the alternator/alternator regulator packing up) and battery checked out, a decent garage should do it for free. Check that the Grounding/battery terminals/clamps have not oxidised, best to take the battery terminal clamps off as the touching surface which you can't see maybe dodgy. Take the clamps off, clean with wet n dry abrasive paper, put the clamps back and spray some Battery terminal protecter.
lockys96
but, does the alternator require to be charged to start? i think ill go down to my local sextons car audio, and ask if he can test my battery
supRo
but, does the alternator require to be charged to start? i think ill go down to my local sextons car audio, and ask if he can test my battery I was thinking if the alternator is duff then it may not charge the battery up properly in the first place. Try borrowing a similar battery if you can!
lockys96
went down to sextons, he asked how long my journeys were. i said around 15mins, he said thats why then, it takes at least 20mins for the battery to charge, what a load of bollox. my parents drive less distance to work everyday and have no problems, what a shite answer. if i was to get a new battery, i think id have to get an aftermarket one, but it could be the alternator. i dont know

They will check out the battery and alternator. They have a really cool bluetooth gizmo that chacks the charging and sends it back to their laptop for accurate analysis. Bit OTT but still cool! It depends on the state of the battery (i.e. if its shagged or not), how long you spend cranking & the alternator output. 20 mins is the AVERAGE time taken to recharge a battery after a start. If you have loads of electrical gizmos on... screen heater, lights etc, then 15 mins probably won't bring the battery up to the same level of charge as before you started it. Have you actually got a new battery yet Si ??? I've got a solar panel on the 'boot' floor to keep the battery topped up. Its only about 1/4 an amp but it does the job. afennell
Probably the bat. Use a voltmeter to check the battery with the car not running. should be 12v, start the engine should go up to around 14v. If it does the alternator should be fine.
AlanM
Have this problem, and alternator charges just over 14 volts, new battery, after removing stereo etc have narrowed it down to the alarm (TOAD) system thats draining it
Kranz
Alarms shouldn't drain more than about 250mA, unless they've just been armed & locked the doors. They can go up to a couple of amps for a minute or so after locking/activation, but should drop back to a small current. Worth checking.
