Supra ST Myster
Just noticed over the last few days that when stationary for a few seconds or so, the fan comes on for about 5 seconds then goes off then back on in about 20 or 30 seconds and so on.... When i got out the car today i felt the radiator and it was stone cold?? I take it this is wrong! Any ideas whats wrong? Felt the water on that big pipe and it was hot, coolant levels are fine. Water is very brown as well though in the coolant container when taking the top off, What the best way to drain this and refill the coolant? Do i have a block in the rad?? cheers
Need4Speed
Is it the cooling fan or the air-con fan?
dude
The fan comes on a lot more if the AC is engaged Dude:flame Dev

Supra ST Myster
Ok turned out to be that someone (yes me) accidently pressed the air con button on, didnt notice it as it is set on Hot at the moment. Just curious though, is the rad that you can touch through the front bumper at the front the cooling rad or the air con rad as i would of though it should be warm if its the cooling one??? Where do you drain the coolant from as i want to clean it out anyway now that i have seen the colour of it? cheers

Not Nessacarily!! but had this happen to my old car. I believe the mechanic said it could be thermostat but if ur needle is working unlikely or this other thing that has 2 peices of metal in it and when the temperature hits certain level it causes one to bend there for touching which tells the fan to come on!! I really wish i could remember name of this peice! i dont know enough to say no more, someone else will prob help more in a second!
SimonB
The Supra has a viscous fan, not an electric one. The engine turns the fan pulley all the time, but the blades only become fixed to it and turn when it gets to a certain temperature. So there isn't a a bimetallic thingy that tells the fan when to come on.

What's the likely cost? Can my one be repaired? Cheers

Drain is to the right and at the bottom of the rad as you look in to the engine from the front of the car dude:flame Dev

Cheers You have to replace the whole fan unit I believe, there isn't a separate thing that tells it when to come on, that's what I was saying. There was a thread on here a while ago about it, if you search for viscous it should turn it up.
Need4Speed
Ok turned out to be that someone (yes me) accidently pressed the air con If you go all winter with the air-con off, the chances are you will have to recharge it in the spring as the gas will gradually escape. I use mine all the time because it de-humidifies in winter and keeps your windows clear. The fuel consumption overhead on a car like the Supra is irrelevant. Keith C
A viscous fan will spin *all* the time, but only goes to full speed at certain temperatures. You can tell if it's siezed by not being able to turn the blades with the engine off, and you tell if it's not engaging if an attempt to stop it when spinning removes a finger
