oxygene
Hi All Spoke to Abbey this morning and got a list of parts needed to get the job finished. I've ordered them from McCarthy Toyota in Croydon and they should hopefully have them in very shortly. List as follows: HG Kit 04112-46056 £150.96 Oil Filter 90915-20003 £7.39 Timing Belt 13568-49036 £28.83 'O' Rings 96761-24023 x2 units £2.13 TC Gaskets 04175-46021 £94.53 Total £285.97 (exc.) £336.01 (inc.) *Grabs another glass of whisky and groans at the cost * I spoke to Abbey and they have said, its a possibility that Im not going to get the car finished before christmas The chap I spoke to (Scott) said, to leave it with him as he might be able to pull some strings (I currently have like everything crossed, in hopes Scott will come through with a solution!!) but he wasnt promising anything... It's all down to Toyota and getting parts in right now. HG and Turbo gaskets are the real problems as they are not stock parts and are not held. So they have to order them from Belgium and if they are not in stock there, then they have to come from Japan If they dont come through all $H!T hits the fan and I deff. wont get it back. I have spoken to Enterprise who I am renting the Poxall Barge from and have extended the loan for another week, imhoping they are gonna bring the cost down as I have hired it for another week...? It was about £221 last week, hopefully it will be longer as I have hired for a lnger period. I am praying for a miracle right now. Roll on 2004!!!! P.S. If anyone on the list has got access to any of the parts on my list and can get access to them immediately or sooner, please contact me via email or PM. supna
If the head is coming off won't it need new head bolts? Ash has told me that the garage has said it won't need new head bolts. Are the ARP ones any good and are they cheaper than stock? David
Adam W
I can only speak for the Mk3 but we never, ever reuse the stock headbolts cos they stretch and they're known to be rubbish. All modded Mk3's run ARP headbolts as a matter of routine, they are a quality product but I don't know whether they are neccessary on the 2JZ (ie the Toyota bolts might be of an equivalent spec to the ARP's and not made out of melted down baked bean tins and liquorice like the Mk3 headbolts!). Dave S
I've read somewhere maybe EPC that the head bolts are not to be re-used.....so I bought ARP studs/ rod bolts from US for the 2jz rebuild Dave S
oxygene
Hi Right new head bolts now been placed on the order at McCarthy, about £3 each so Im told... How many will I need, again so I can add it to the net total currently sprialling out of control......
oxygene
Hi All Just been doing some figures...and it don't look good HG Removal £1320 Gasket Kits & Stuff (HG, TC, Oil Filter, etc) £350 inc. Head Bolts TC Recon, Upgrade £1633 Total (at this point in time): £3303 Im hoping it doesnt get any higher than this figure. I have sorta budgeted for about £3500, but would be kewl if I dont get near that figure.
supna
I think Leon only charges about £600 (approx £50 per hour £42.50+VAT) to do a hg my guessing its plus parts but still I would argue the cost of labour you are being charged. £1320 / 12 hours labour = £110 per hour !!!!! (£93.50+VAT an hour). Hang on are they going to charge you another £1320 to put it all back together. I would seriously question the cost of labour on this one. Ah rant over, don't like seeing people getting ripped off.
oxygene
As far as I know, the prices I stated are the ones going to be charged.(again I am not slating or having a go at Abbey Motorsport, I just wanna get my car back as soon as possible) They have quoted £1320 for head removal, skim and replacement, plus parts, (which in this case are £177.38 inc Vat for the HG kit) As soon as I can physiaclly get the HG kit to them, they can finish that part of the job. Total cost for HG replacement, etc £1497.42. The TC's are being reconned and upgraded by Turbo Dynaics in Christchurch (Co. Website) which is gonna cost me £1633 and I am providing the TC gasket kit which is £111.07 inc. Vat. They have quoted me a 2 day turn around for those, so they should be back on thursday hopefully. Total cost for TC reconn, etc £1744.07 Then there are the other items (listed previously) which again I am supplying. Total £47.56. Total cost £3289.56ish
toyotasuprauk
Hi Oxygene sorry to hear about this expense! I agree with the others that you have said nothing that suggests you don't trust Abbey or are questioning them but when your spending this sort of money you have every right to double check with others into the costs of the work. If they have a problem with you doing this it only suggests they have something to hide. I don't know how long it takes to take a remove a head (I'm not a mechanic) but I thought it was in the region of 12 hours like others have said. As Supna said this equates to something in the region of £110 per hour which is absolutely ridiculous! I hope you get this sorted in a way that your happy with but I would have to question that sort of labour rate and just hope your not getting ripped off. Good luck. oxygene
As I have said so far, I just want to get her back on the road. Abbey were originally recommended to me by a friend who has a R33 Skyline and he has used them extensively and has been very satisfied with their service, etc. When he knew the probs I was having with my MKIV he told me to go and see them, as their mech's were very good. Give them their dues, they have diagnosed the problem and produced a solution, which was an HG change. Whilst it has been then there they found out the TC's were not behaving and sourced a repair centre and found me a price to get the work done. I have found the costing for the gasket sets, etc and am getting them ordered through McCarthy Toyota in Croydon; firstly because I know the garage very well as I have been using them for ages, plus they have sourced import parts for me pretty quickly in the past. The reason they didnt start on my car until wednesday of last week was down to, they wanetd a specific engineer to work on my car, who was working on another vehicle until wednesday morning. I understand their reasoning behind this. Abbey dont specialise in Supras, their main trade is Nissan, but their good recommendation prompted me to go to them initially for the diagnostic tests. Which were done very well, I couldnt fault their pit boys. Abbey Garage first started working in 1965 in the way many garages have before, work at the time was on general run of the mill cars of the period, but by 1969 Abbey Garage had obtained a very good repuatation locally for its performance work. This included much work developing a Group 5 Twin-cam escort for the british touring car championship of 1970, also during 1971 a lot of work was carried out on race and rally Hillman Imps and Clan Crusaders. The full text available at http://www.abbeymotorsport.co.uk/Content/main.htm At this present time, I am battling to get the car back before christmas. Mainly due to parts being made available from Toyota, nothing to do with Abbey. Labour pricing aside Abbey have vowed to complete the work and after seeing the results of my friends Skyline, I am very interested to get my car back and take her for a spin!! SimonB
I'd be very interested in how you get on with Turbo Dynamics, and what their hybrids are like because they're just up the road. I've heard vaguely good things about them, but no real concrete info.

Steve Cargill
The gaskit set I've used is Gasket set, 04111-46094. I think this is actually for a UK car but Leon has used that set on both rebuilds of my J spec engine. It does contain a head gaskit. Yes, get new head bolts and I think there are 13 of them. I'd also think about putting in a new oil pump -15100-46052 - given your mileage. Reading between the lines your head work costs are not just the removal and fitting of the gaskit. You will also be getting the head stripped down, skimmed, rebuilt and shimmed. Make sure they know how to shim it properly, otherwise (like me) you could get stung for lots of extra labour. I had a hire car Daewoo Lanos a few years ago and things liked falling off it, breaking etc. The hire company delivered a new one to me at work and took away the old one. oxygene
Just spoke to Scott at Abbey. They have sent off the TC's to Turbo Dynamics, they should be back soon. They have found some engine related bits which they have rectified, I am going down there tonight and will post up about those when I have got home. I also spoke to McCarthy Toyota all is still on track there, so when I get the parts from Toyota, they will be jetted down to Abbey for fitting (fingerz X'd) Speak soon with more answers
