Needed: Your driving horror stories!

My girlfriend has just texted me in a bit of a panic. She passed her driving test not long ago and went for her first proper drive out in her first car this morning

Apparantly it was a bit of a nightmare. Taking her sister and mum to go shopping, they got lost and she ended up going the wrong way down a one way street - something that I've done more than once :D Needless to say the resulting close shaves with other cars has left her a bit shaken.

So to make her feel better I thought I'd ask you guys / girls.... everyone makes a few silly mistakes on their first year or so of driving, so let's hear them ;)

Mine first: Tried to take a couple of friends to a house party and through the nerves and distraction of shouting mates managed to hit almost every kerb on the way :D God knows how I got there in one piece.... oh and when I test drove my second car I ran through a red light at traffic works and nearly got hit by a lorry.... to make it worse I then reversed back again but pulled over to the wrong kurb, thereby blocking all the oncoming traffic :looney:

Just passed my test and being very foolish tried to overtake a bmw 316 ( I was in an astra 1.2!) on a single carriage A road, wouldnt of been so bad but didnt even bother to change down gears, as i started to go past he put his foot down. Ended up facing an oncoming car and spun of the road. luckily no one was hurt and no damage to any cars either. lucky escape and one of my learning experiences! :)

my first day out in passing the test was very very funny :)

i had spent 9 months restoring a mini, and had it all gleaming with new bodywork and paint and interior, all looking lovely...

but when i went out for its first drive, i didnt know what to do, i had no instructor telling me where to turn around :)

i ended up on a 15 mile drive instead of just around the block like i had planned :)

and a few occasions of driving at night, in built up areas with no lights on, lots of people flashing me, and being content with haviong so many people flashing there lights in admiration of my car :)

oh, i forgot. on my first day driving by myself i took my dads blue van out. when i got home i managed to leave a big blue paint mark up the side of the naighbours car. I also learnt that day that white spirit removes paint off other cars very quickly!!!!

I drove to college in my old fiesta, locked the door (the type where you hold handle out and push button down) shut door noticing keys were still in ignition. Tried for an hour with 5 college mates to get in it, when one mentioned he knew of bending the car door out but glass could ping.

Bent door.......got keys...bent door back :D with just one hair line crack on paint.

I then remembered at this point a 2p being pushed into the boot lock opens the boot.... i then took a beating from them all :(

First car I had was a RWD Granada estate. I dropped a girl off at her house and chatted to her a bit through the window. Then revved up to show off by doing a wheelspin away. I forgot I had full lock on, so when I dumped the clutch it just lurched forwards and left, nosediving into the hedge.

After I passed, A mate lent me their car for the weekend coz I didn't have a car..so I took some mates to the pub one evening in it...they all got v pissed and one of them puked up in the back of the car...so I spent all night cleaning it out because I had to give it back the next day..I had not seen the big pile of puke under the passenger seat though.

My friend who lent me the car did though after it had been sat in the sun and he had to drive his Mother to the Airport the next day smelling of sick he he.

I was so embarresed:(

My dad once reversed out of the drive and managed to T-bone the patrol car that belongs to the copper who lives across the road from us.

As for me, I was out on my trike (1300cc metro-engined auto, 2 front wheels, single rear wheel) at a local biker meeting spot and was getting ready to go when some geezers started asking me about it. Whilst talking, stood by the side of it, I started it up and put my left leg over the frame to give it a rev. Unfortunately, I caught the gear-shift with the back of my leg and as a result the damn thing reversed up my right leg. At least I was in big bike boots so it didn't hurt, but what an absolute idiot I felt. Took ages to live that one down.

I was once at a party when this young lad turned up driving his mum's Metro on L-plates with his mate keeping an eye on him as he hadn't passed yet. He failed completely to get up the drive and managed to get the front wing stuck on the gate post - if he reversed it would dig deeper into the wing and if he went forward it would have gone into the door and hinge. He got out in a right state and we all came out, said it's okay, there's enough of us we can lift it away from the gate post and park it up. That would have been a good plan if the silly sod hadn't stalled it in reverse. Next thing I know, this Metro jump-starts and goes in a wide arc backwards to slam into the driver's side of next-door-but-three's car! The poor lad was hysterical. His mum was okay about it, at least.

Was trundling down the road one sunday morning, when i

spotted a police car pulling out of a side road, consequently

he was going to pull onto the road behind me, suddenly realising

i had no seatbelt on, i was fumbling about with the seatbelt clip

when i suddenly stopped! I'd hit the car in front which had stopped at

a roundabout!! The guy i hit looked in his mirror, saw the cop car, then

just drove off! Luckily the copper saw the funny side of it and pretty

much let me off with a bollocking after doing the usual vehicle checks etc.

All this happened at about 15-20 mph, and to make matters worse, my

mates dad was just walking out of the papershop and saw the entire

incident!:haha:

The evening I passed my test, I took my MK1 Capri around to a mate’s, taking a couple of other mates with me.

Almost there and going round a gentle bend, I started to lose the back end.

No I remembered someone saying that you need to apply more power is this happened, so booted it.

The backend swung out and I sideswiped a old princess.

I stopped and spoke to the owner... Handed over £50 to cover the damage and went onto my mates in the next road.

Spent the rest of the evening trying to push out the concave mess that was the rear quarter of my car..

A week later and the Princesses suspension had collapsed altogether... oops.

Oh yeah here we are. Lived at my mums when I passed test, it's on street parking only and really limited so if tehre was a space you had to be quick!

one night loads of mate and I were in seperate cars, met at mine and I said i'd park up and hop in one of the others- there was a space but it was tiny so I reversed in, but having an audience was not good so I misjudged it.

For some reason I forgot (mental blank??? who knows) that there was a car behind me at this point so I slammed it into reverse to back out of the space that I was half in and *bang* thought "stupid kurb" AND DID IT AGAIN before I realised I was actually doing was just pulling forward then ramming the car behind me over and over. Needless to say my mates were in hysterics watching they had no idea what I was up to. Somehow I did no damage to either car.... thank the lord for bumpers!!

Not really a driving horror story, but a carwashing horror story -->

Was polishing my wheels yesterday, when I hear something next to me breathing heavely. I look around and it's a big dog, face full with blood (ate some chickens from the neighbours), looking VERY mad at me. What to do next? Throw my polishing cloth at the dog? I just stept backward towards the house and the last meters I ran pretty fast. Don't know where the dog went after this.

driving horror story --> once drove off with the handbrake on (lousy escort, so it's not bad).

Greets,

Peter
