carl0s
I've been offered a reasonably priced Lower Control Arm, for keeping as a spare, but there's a cut in the boot on the balljoint, which happened when it was removed from the car. Does that make it no good or what?
merckx
The grease will come out! I've seen some universal boots on Ebay, or try your local motor factors. I would be surprised if you couldn't get another, it's much easier to get a match with the control arm off the car.
carl0s
Well it's £25 including delivery, and the bushes and balljoint itself is good.
RobSheffield
balljoint isnt removable, so you cant replace the rubber boot, so it will fail an MOT and since they aint the easiest thing to replace, id say NOOO dont do it
merckx
You don't have to remove the balljoint to fit a new boot!
absz
balljoint isnt removable, so you cant replace the rubber boot, so it will fail an MOT and since they aint the easiest thing to replace, id say NOOO dont do it the rubber boots on a ball joint are not part of an mot test so theres no problems there. if it was me i'll buy it and you can always remove the boot from the old one to fit on repacking the joint with grease. RobSheffield
well i must have been doing mot tests wrongly then:sly: so if you MOT'd a car, and the balljoint boots had a split in them, you would pass it?
absz
so if you MOT'd a car, and the balljoint boots had a split in them, you would pass it? yes i would:d the outer cv joint boots and steering gaiters are failures. the ball joints are checked for play and lift. split ball joint boots shorten the life of a component and are advised but not failed. RobSheffield
hmm, maybe i had an advisory - so long ago now i forget, it wasnt on the Supra
absz
all testers have there ways. most testers fail split wiper blades etc but its only a failure if the blade is not clearing the screen properly. nothing to do with a split in wiper blade. but hey thats life. carl0s
Frig it. I'll buy it anyway. It's good for spares or selling if someone wants to get uprated bushes installed or something. Good for the money anyway, I bought the other one which is perfect for the same price These lower control arms are ~ £250 from Toyota.

Chris Wilson
Not wanting to be a smart arse, but why not just remove the boot from your existing wishbone, once the joint is worn (or you bend it... ), and swap it on to your bargain buy spare one when you need to use it? Or is that too easy...

carl0s
good idea unless the old boot gets damaged in the removal process:D Well, I guess that only happens if you use a ball joint splitter, which I don't think is really ideal or necessary for the job anyway. A large hammer did it for me
Chris Wilson
Whetehr it's removable (intact) i don't know, but it probably is, with care. There is no need or reason to damage a ball joint boot in splitting the joint if you know how to do it. Carlos seems to have the right idea...
