Decoking?

Hi All,

I've taken the heads of my toy. A Rover V8.

The internal inlets are cover in a tarry sort of substance, but I can get them acid dipped. However, the piston heads are caked in black gunk.

I don't want to take them out, rather do it in situ. So does anyone know how best to clean the crowns of my pistons up?

Any assitance welcomed.

Thanks

Steve

ps I'm also in the market for a Cosworth T5 gearbox to mate to the V8. Anyone got any contacts?

I have seen several nasty looking Rover V8 internals ........ when they are as full of shite as yours seems to be , its best to strip and clean it thoroughly........

If you can't be arsed, tape up the block face (to prevent more shit getting into oil/water channels) and use a wire brush attachment on the piston crowns. Do them 1 at a time ( @  TDC) stuff rags down the other cylinders and suck/blow the crap away.

I've used a scraper on really bad pistons before now.......... just make sure you don't gouge the crowns

Thanks for that.

The rest of the engine is in really good nick.

No scoring on camshaft or lifters. Pushrods ok too.

I'm going to try what you suggest, but I was kinda hoping there was a chemical solution of some description that would do the job. Doesn't Redex decoke?

I've got a 4-barrel Weber to stick on it now.

Hope it fires up when it's all back together!!!!

Steve
