A Very Strange Loss of Power

This has got me worried & very stumped!!, although its probably not that hard.

ok, just got my car back running as she should be. everything looked perfect and was planning on going for a RR run as summers coming up and want to try and make some RWYB drags this year.

anyway problem happened when driving to a friends house up the M3, poodling along nicely, Speed limit + 20, and then suddenly lose power, not a total loss but she feels 'groggy' on the uptake. get that cold feeling and start to pull across to the inside. no dash indicators showing anything out of the ordinary. get into the middle lane and change down, however whilst changing down, and i was changing slowly, the engine just cut out!! so lobbed her into 4th and bumped her, thought that was an anamoly so tried again and got the same problem. wasnt far from my friends house so thought i'd get there rather than get stuck on the motorway.

got there, maybe 15mins later probably 10 miles and the cars running perfectly again, no idle problems nothing, sounds good. double check under the hood or the usual, no pipes off, no air leaking from anywhere, no liquids missing.

thought it was just some inconsistency in the fuel or tank.

since then its happened twice more, no rhyme or reason its not after ive been thrashing it or driving hard. the last time was this weekend driving down to portsmouth on the A3 going up that hill around the Punchbowl at about 40.

Now i'm sure somethings up but just cant find it. when it happened this time i thought i'd try and find out whats affected and this is what i can come up with;

turbos sound as if they're struggling against something,

sounds like some Detting at the higher revs,

no idle what so ever, just dies when im not on the power,

very sugglish on the start of acceleration, although does seem to calm at mid range,

if i keep my foot at the same pressure on the peddle she feels like shes flooding, sluggish sluggish fine fine sluggish etc etc practically bouncing down the road.

but once again when i finish my trip 30 odd miles down the road, with no undue turbo action, back to normal, not a single flutter or glug, the rev counter looks as if its stapled to 600RPM.

this is really strange, ive just changed my fuel and oil filter. and i'm wondering whether its the quality of tesco's fuel.

cheers

Hey Rob,

Sounds a bit similiar to what I had with mine a month or two back!

When it does the cutting are you finding any carbon residue coming out of the exhaust?? I had a similar hesitance that was due to a couple of things:

Poor connections to the FMIC (i.e loose intercooler pipes and collars) and a faulty coilpack connector (these are very flimsy and suffer from excess heat so become brittle and break when changing the plugs).

Have you got an FMIC or the stock SMIC?

I'm running on Tesco Super Unleaded at the moment with no obvious side affects so I'd imagine it's not the fuel.

Just MHO m8 but might give you a starting point! :D

Cheers,

Pete :)

well been out working on the car this afternoon and am not sure about the findings,

checked the ic pipes - no leakege or loos clamps

started her up and pulled the 'condenser', electrical clip, on each of the packs individually, when pulled each one affected the car the same, serious wobble and sounded really bad.

this however is nothing like the feeling i'm getting when my problem happens....

this is so bloody frustrating, i dont suppose there is any one who has the diagnosis kit for a 93 jspec and is willing to do a little testing for reasonable fees..

cheers

  • 1 month later...

:bump:

want to renew this as i think ive figured out when its happening and have got some crazy notions as to possible causes that need to be shot down.

right just to answer ian's q the fuel filter's brand new, just changed, so i hope it nots gammy and this did happen on occasion before i think.

when it happens: well i think its caused when i cruise, i know this sounds so very wrong but im neigh on positive. if i just keep my foot as steady as poss and cruise. at first not a single problem she wanders along all nice like and then something happens, cant really describe it that well i sometimes think its a click or maybe a different reaction to the pedal, and then if i put her in neutral the revs will drop off and die. bump her, and she kicks in straight away clutch in and then she'll jump between 0 and 1200 rpm for a while until it calms down again, and if i pull up after that there'll still be whisps of black smoke coming out.

seems not to matter what speed i was doing 65 from stansted to bisley last sat and i happened 1/2 way there and again this morning when trying to keep a steady 100 down the m11. the longer i cruise at this steady speed the longer it seems to take to clear afterward, lumpy idling for longer.

my crazy possibilities:

1 - o2 sensor - what control does it have?? could it continually cuase the ecu to remap??

2 - the auto throttle thingy-ma-jig, on the other side of the throttle cable is the electronic adjustment? that i take to be connected to the ecu and used to control the idle so maybe theres a break in/ loose connection to the control that is causing slight overfueling, the o2 sensor then picking it up and trying to lean out the mx and the two are then fighting to restore the balance

3 - ive f***ed up when doing an ecu reset and driven too fast/too slow and the ecu has not had the right range, speed/revs, to map itself correctly

4 - i thought maybe ecu probs but after reading some other threads CW seems to believe that pretty unlikely, although ive not even looked at the ecu since matt h corrected a sloppy jobs of installing the rltc by the prev owner.

im sure there could be other reasons that i thought before but they flown the nest of my brain

all help gratefully received,

Rob S:confused:

hope not, just changed them the NGK BK something 7, ES in there im sure, i didnt re gap them, should i have???, thought brand new wouldnt need it.

plus checked the resistance of the coil packs as they were all the same reading and petty much bang in the middle of the recommended values given on here somewhere!

keep the input coming,

Rob S
