RLTC Health Warning

Near totalled the car last night. I was at a big cross roads, it was raining dark and traffic was patchy. Waited for a reasonable clear spot, RL was set to wet, box in manual and first. The road cleared in both directions, and left enough room for me to pull out smartly. I pulled out at the same sort of throttle pressure I usually do in the wet when pulling out of junctions turning right, the car gripped as usual, but half way through the turn I felt the back go and heard the wheels spin up , I instinctively followed the car with fronts gently eased the throttle but the slide stayed on, the back continued round to the verge on the other side of the cross roads, if felt the NS wheel hit the (fortunately) flat verge, but only two feet from a deep ditch. The remaining rear on the road got traction and I started heading for the opposite side of the road, grip was almost regained, NSR I thought covered in mud, got it straight and back to my side of the road. It all happened so fast, but slow enough to know what was going on, but not one single flash from cars front or rear.

WTF I have RLTC, I have made much more spirited getaways in the wet before, the junction is not normally slippery. When I went back this morning to look for signs; only ¾ of my wheel was on the verge, the grass was clean with the tyre mark only just visible. No signs of oil or anything else.

So I checked my dat, my wheel allocations were wrong, they had flipped from front to back they had changed from the original configuration settings. So my rears were reference, not much use in a RWD car. I drove another configuration run this morning and checked again and the settings were back to normal. Just to double check as I have not done it before, I jacked the car up reset the minimum speed to 500 and span each wheel by hand and check the monitoring screen, all allocations were confirmed.

The only explanation I have, is that I have tuning RL dats and have been experimenting with the RL app. Normally I check settings with Graham’s app afterwards to see if all is OK, but I don’t think I did last Wednesday as the laptop battery was getting low and kept shutting me down.

It may be something I did, but I am not connecting my car up the the RL application again.

Now I have done what I have advised other to do, I recommend the physical spinning of wheels to check RL wheel allocations if you have any doubts it is quick , no more than two of three minutes a wheel and totally fool proof.

If you have been playing the RL app, I would advise a check with Grahams App to make sue you settings are as they should be.

Hiya Phil,

Glad to hear your ok mate.

I was wondering whether you still supplied the supra DAT file, as I am in need of one, in the near future.

Glad you are OK Phil  . Thats scary sh!t. Bad it happened but good it happened in a slower situation. Dread to think what would have happened cornering on fast road.

Blimey Phil close one mate well held. I had a brown trouser traction moment too this week!

Could have been two silver GZ's up for breaking in the local area!

Just seen my tyres and they are getting slick so thats anuver 250 squid!!!! I might save em for drag racing.

Thanks for the good wishes guys. Thank god for the quick wash cycle;) In hindsight it was not as bad as it felt, but I have not had the back end break away like that for two years so I forgot what it was like.

TBH I can't be certain that it was the RL app or my error; I have one of the first versions. As I said the laptop was dieing so I had to stop what I was doing. But I don’t remember doing anything wrong. I have heard others have had a few minor issues with the RL app, but nothing like this. I will not be trying it again that is for sure, unless I can check all settings with Graham’s app before I drive the car.

I think what made it worse was I usually get a bit of slip on the way out of junctions as a matter of course, if I get too enthusiastic RL always corrects if I get it wrong. But this time as usual I drove as if RL would be there, so when it did not cut at all in I was already heading for trouble and human reactions can’t compare with RL, a lot happened in a second or two while you are expecting the technology to take over, as we all know the rear of a MKIV can carry a lot of momentum.

The app we use normally is fine. I spent a few months helping Graham test it on my computer and in my car. I have 100% confidence in Grahams work and have never had any doubts about the ability of his software to interact perfectly with the RL ECU. My 0 - 100 wet test was carried out on the first the version before the one we all use now, and that experience will stay with me forever, not because it was on the edge, but because it was such a unique experience to be accelerating so hard and remaining in control of the car in such appalling conditions.

If any member of MKIVsupra.net wants a good dat tuned to their car, PM your e-mail address and tyres sizes and type of box; auto or manual and how you like to drive ie conservative, fun or I like looking side ways. Seriously I have grade one, two and three and custom dats, Grade one is conservative and good for cautious drivers and winter conditions particularly for auto boxes, grade two is a little less tight and good if you like a little more slide or are sparing in the use of auto kick down in poor conditions and want something suited to cool roads, grade three is good for more tail action and high grip levels. If you are insane we can discuss how you would like RL to work and we can develop a custom or you can simply turn it off.. What ever you want I will try to turn round a suitable dat in four or five days. I have a number of big projects underway at the moment so my time on the BBS is limited so delays in replies are possible.
