RedM
Jspec auto TT. I've noticed that, when I'm at a standstill (or sometimes when crawling in traffic), pushing the brake pedal down fairly firmly causes my idle revs to drop below my normal idle speed. Normally the car idles at a tad over 500rpm but I can drop it to about 480-490 when on the brakes. Normal and/or to be expected?
steve single
Man i am sure your getting paranoid about you car:sly: But mine used to idle about 800rpm.
SuperSupra
You car idles at 500? Crikey, either mine's wrong, or yours is cos I normally idle around 900! Er, sorry, that's no help at all is it? I've no idea why it would do that, strange.
Kopite
FWIW my idle used to be 500 too
SuperSupra
Hmmm, strange....
Ian R
They do drop as you are basically putting more load on the engine but not applying any more revs
jamesmark
when you use your breaks, you use power, and and your putting stress on the auto box its a bit like "why does the revs change when i press the A/C button"
steve single
yeah between 800 and 900 when warm seems right. Just over 1k when cool.

SuperSupra
when you use your breaks, you use power, and and your putting stress on the auto box its a bit like "why does the revs change when i press the A/C button" But when you press the A/C, the revs go UP slightly, or when you turn your lights on, the same happens. Very strange for the revs to go down!
RedM
I think mine idles at 500 because I have the 'stealth' option enabled.

steve single
If it makes you sleep any better Martin, get the car in for a good checking over and a service. We can do the walbro when the weather gets a bit warmer too. 12v mod also.
RedM
It is actually about 510-520.
RedM
The car has actually been 500 idle since I got it. In it's entire life I don't believe it has ever had an engine fault.
Pete
Mine too. Idles around 500. When fitting the RLTC I was looking at the software and it was idling at about 480.
TLicense
Mine idles at 1150. Up to 1500 when cold.
sarjo
Mine idles at 1150. Up to 1500 when cold. Mine starts about 1000 but drops to 840 after a couple of mins. 500 sounds very low?
Ian C
When you press the brakes you use vacuum boost assist, which is taken directly from the intake plenum. This means a bit of air that was going into the engine doesn't any more, so the idle drops slightly. It's only noticeable at idle because of the relatively small volumes of air involved. The idle going up when you turn on the aircon is electronically controlled - the ECU pumps up the idle control valve to compensate for the realtively large load the aircon compressor puts on the engine. Try turning the steering wheel at idle as well, or putting on the rear demister - these too up the idle -Ian
