Ian W
no offence taken mate... I get a lot of abuse from subaru owners for my weapon of choice it's as simple as this.. I drive my car everyday and it costs me a fair wedge of cash... it's been hammered for the last 3 and half years and never let me down touch wood (except the paint... that's crap!!) and if I was runnin a fast car everyday I'd have been bankrupt a long time ago!!! totally agree, bud.......after all, mine is an n/a
edd_t
you think my car's ugly... mine being the one black cat put up there... the main problem with the fto is the insurance cost they get grouped with sports cars and they ain't but they're nicer than a celica... GT4 excepted and I do love the Mr2 tubby but our lass doesn't like the headlights so that's out... Quote: shes got her heart set on one now. have been looking in autotrader, they go from about £1500 to £10000. so am guessing she will get quite a nice one for about £7-8000 You're nuts if he's gonna spend that much on one 6K tops unfortunately... and if you're after a later one make sure it's got the new front end, many older ones are classed as 2000 2001 and it's a mistake... remember to check the seatbelt tags for the age..., buy one off the owners club they are usually pretty well looked after... , the GT4 celica is the only celica worth bothering with as the fto will beat most other celicas (but I will admit there's many more modding parts for the celica) and the fto sounds nicer... best thing would be to get her to drive one and see what she thinks, most people fall in love with the smooth V6... and it's about as fast as a NA supra anyway!! hahahahaha:eyebrows: nice one, some good points. hopefully she will sell the Golf for about 8 grand. so if i point her in the right direction for an FTO we might have 2000 left over for mods sounds good to me. she doesnt like the Celica it would have been great if she got the GT4, nevermind. Darren-K
the very best FTO`s are they GPX and / or the Aero versions. much more performance than the standard versions.... beware, before i found my Supe i looked at 5 FTO`s and 3 of them claimed to be the GPX version,. and they definately were not... the ONLY way to be certain is to do an engine comparison as the GPX and aero have very diff engines to the standard range of fto. becarefull tho.. Conrad
I used to own a grey FTO V6 GR a couple cars before my Sup. I think they're a superb looking car (especially in black). The bonnet and headlights give a real muscular presence for a small car. The V6 sounds truely awesome too! You may already know this but (from memory) the models are as follows: 1.8L GS (wouldn't bother) 2.0 V6 GR (Ok but not that quick - I had this one) 2.0 V6 GPX ( 200bhp Mivec engine and the one to have) This is my opinion but the Tiptronic box sucks dick, it seemed to stay in too higher gear when going round corners or at low revs. It also gave that horrible stuttering drone you expect from an auto box. My other gripe with the FTO is the noisey tappets, mine sounded like a 1.0L Fiesta towards the end. I think with the GR model you have to replace them to cure it - and that's expensive!. With the GPX Mivec though you can adjust them rather than replace them which is a lot cheaper. When viweing any model make sure you see it started from cold. All that said I think they're a quality car and look the part, double check insurance tho as it can be pricey. And as said above, def don't pay no more than £6k. I'd say £5k would buy you a real nice low mileage black GPX with a few tasteful mods. Good luck dude! Your missus will look the part in an FTO no doubt! Suprasteve
my girl friend has a 2.0 V6 GR manual (non mivec version). It feels very sturdy and grips well when chucking it round bends at speeds below 50 mph but a bit hairy above. It's quick enough but won't make you go wow and you really have to scream the nuts off it to get it to got fast but easy goes over 7,000 rpm. Build quality feels a bit tinny especially the boot but the interia is nice particularly the dash. She has used it for a daily runner to work about 40 miles a day for 2 years and only had 1 issue which cost about £70 to fix, so very reliable and good on fuel. Alot of the local kids are always asking who car is the quickest (comparing it to mine) - i reply depends whos driving what I agree with conalex, it does sound a bit tappety when cold. I've read a few reviews on them and read that they were never meant as a genuine sports car but more for a long distance cruiser ?! I personally think they look special but also feel they should perform much better but i've not driven the faster mivec version so can't compare really. hope that helps

terribleturner
But if she buys a boxter people will always think she's not got much money and couldn't afford a real Porsche

edd_t
But if she buys a boxter people will always think she's not got much money and couldn't afford a real Porsche thats what ive been telling her. better to spend £20,000 on an old 911 and look cool than by a boxster and wish you bought a 911... how_supra
to be honest i'd view it as a step down from the Golf lol How can you say that?? The golf is square and boring. [a very popular choice amongst estate agents for some reason] The best part about the FTO is the fun factor, you can really chuck them around corners, they are just glued to the road. The interior picture James stuck up on mine is standard. They look much better with a few cheap cosmetics mods, changing the dials, and some type R products for example Good luck with it
Ian W
sorry, i just like the golfs (inexplicable so please don't ask lol) totally different car though to be honest but i'd rather have either than a boxster! Ian W
yup.....totally different type of car 'init'. my list would go like this if she's getting rid of the golf. 1. Celica GT4 2. MR2 Turbo 3. FTO V6 4. ANYTHING ELSE 5. Porsche Boxster

edd_t
yup, shes saying no to a Supe. she wants something smaller! she will change her mind 15 million times before getting the next car.
how_supra
My completely unbiased opinion says she should buy an FTO.
Ian W
even more off topic, i went back to my car and there was a '98 MR2 next to me (mine is a '94). both cars should be the same colour but mine really did make his look PINK!!! should have taken a photo really lol
Harps
There was an actual pink MR2 in Bradford-on-Avon for a while. Not seen it for ages now, but it was proper pink. Not faded red, actual pink. It looked like it'd been slapped on with emulsion!
