It's a lie, don't listen to him.

 

Basically, the ionised dilithium crystals within the power steering pump may not fully engage during cross planetary travel. In this situation, steering degradation can occur (not great as I am sure you will agree). The red button is ONLY to be used at speeds equal to or over 345metres/sec. It will fire an electronic pulse which reactivates the crystals so that normal steering can occur.

 

If all else fails, use the search function on the forum. It's really complicated but someone has explained it better in the past, search for "red button"
