£210 road tax

I pay road tax because my Supra pollutes and causes damage to roads... if I only use it at weekend why don't I get a discount over 300 mile a day drivers in big cars?

yeah I often wonder that. Tax should be based just on mileage, oh wait it is too in the massive fuel tax we pay also :(

£210, that's pretty expensive IMHO

I think the general idea is that petrol tax is supposed to cover road tax/pollution costs, therefore is proportional to the amount of petrol you use whereas road tax is to cover the general administration of car ownerships and the road transport system as a whole.

Of course, in practice it just goes into one big "TAX" bucket and comes out again in the form of over-inflated MP salaries, but if you don't like it you can always vote for a different corrupt government party! :taped:

really? How does a V5 cost more to produce for a bigger engine or take up more space in a DB?

Like you say they are just after you money, no-one seems to be able to clearly define how the money is spent, I think that is poor communication.

Proving that you only use it at the weekend is the issue though- how would you police it? It brings us onto the possibilities of trackers in a cars and knowing our every movement. Lets face it, like the TV license they aren't going to believe you if you say you don't use it, if you've got the keys to it!

I'd rather pay a one off fee and do what the hell I like, whenever I want to, than being tracked within an inch of my life and pocket.

They do it with insurance, not un-cheatable but hey. off the top of my head- They could make it compulsary to declare mileage when you buy tax? would also crack down on clocking.

how would that crack down on in year clocking though? each year you'd toddle off to your friendly clocker and get a few thousand whipped off the clock and then go get your tax.

I cant see why they dont jsut stick all the tax on petrol. The more your on the road the more you pay - as you do with everything else in life !

I agree I think it would be the best/easiest way to do it, but I'm sure like all things related to tax it would be an extra burden on someone and it would deemed to be unfair and ruining people's businesses.

You can't ever win.

Why it is always about putting up everything to price people out rather than reducing the cost of trains for example to encourage people to use them?

I think even if petrol did cost £1.52 a litre it would still be cheaper to drive the Supra to work than get the train.
