Class One
Here's one to put the cat amongst the pigeons. Has common sense prevailed at last, or it is persecution of a minority ethnic? Link here. Discuss.

AJI
Common sense I think.... a school uniform has to be applied to everyone. Just because you have a different religion doesn't put you above the rest of the pupils. All religious clothing of any religion is not permitted in a school uniform. So why should a Muslim be treated differently? The politically correct people always bash on about equality.. but when its applied there are still lawsuits filed. Robert
I can honestly see both sides of the story but i dont see why it is a problem, if jewish, muslim or any people wear something to do with their religion with their school uniform. Its not offending anyone if they wear it. I just think this will cause alot of problems which dont need to be there. Again im not muslim or jewish so i don't know how much it means to them to be allowed to wear such items but i think not allowing people to wear such a small thing is really stupid. When i was in school it was never a problem what people were wearing so why do people who have no understand of how this effects a school environment can make such stupid decision. This is my opinion and i just feel this whole thing about pupils wearing anything religious, this includes christians, jewish and muslim kids is just pointless and will just cause trouble. tbourner
Otherwise there's no point in having uniform, people could wear burberry caps and Reeboks. The whole point of the uniform (not just in school - forces, police etc.) is to bring order - with everyone the same there is no natural heirarchy created, everyone is equal and in all areas where there are uniforms, it is necessary to have that equality for reasons of discipline/respect for superiors/no distraction from adequate learning! Max Headroom
This is common sense, the school had made concessions with regard to what Muslims wear AFTER consultation with local Muslim clerics. This action was brought to bear not by the girl but by her male relatives.

Supragal
absolutely right. If she doesn't have to wear the uniform, none of the others do either.
Ark
Simple fact is that the school requrires pupils to wear school uniform. She wasn't wearing the uniform, and wasn't willing to wear it, therefore she was at the wrong school. If she had opted to go to a non-uniform school, there probably wouldn't have been an issue. This has been blown out of all proportion with the religious thing - it's not a religious thing - it's a school rules thing, and the same would have happened if a pupil chose to wear jeans and t-shirt. Jiversteve
Looks like we are a bunch of right wing activists. Nothing wrong with that. It is a belief system just as much as Islam. Interesting thought though guys. How many of us have seen the cartoons that caused so much damage to property and additional hatred (also against the Muslim faith). I wonder how many Muslims have seen them? I bet they have been published in their Newspapers, magazines and pamphlets. Otherwise how would they know what they were rioting about in the UK. And that is where the whole thing goes to pot. There seems to be a massive chip on their shoulders about all sorts of stuff. Perhaps we should reinforce that they live in a democracy where, in theory at least, the rules are made by the majority, not the minority, and as such if they wish to continue to live in this country, as most of us wish to do, they should concede to that majority view. The alternative is obvious. I personally would hate to live in a police state or dictatorship, but it seems that our authorities loose sight of the fact that we are already a liberal nation, and bowing further to ethnic pressures, will slowly devalue all our national characteristics, good or bad, but that is what defines us as Great Britain. Supragal
I'm sorry, but at the end of the day it boils down to this: ADULTS arguing about who's imaginary friend is best. Seriously.
supra dan
i seriuosly think we are turning ordinary people into racists in this country with all this pc crap. every time you pick up a newspaper there is an example of something that upsets a minority and another case where a british person does something and you think if he was forign nothing would be said for fear of causing offence. it all buids up in peoples minds. 99.9 % of muslims just want a quiet life but its them that the bad feeling falls on. i am an englishman living in scotland, if i had a pound for every time id been called an english bastard (even by my friends ) i would be able to go single! buy hey, its just banter, i give as good as i get, i only get upset when they start on about ronaldinhos goal in the world cup:violin:

Charlotte
I don't see how it is racist to agree with not allowing the girl to wear her relligious dress. There are codes of dress in school so that minority groups aren't picked on.
supRo
Well, I used to go to the school in question and I am a Muslim. This school has a very fair and tolerant dress code policy to all religions. This policy is in line with what a Muslim girl should wear if she wishes too. This is about one individual and an arrogant person that tried to take matters into their own hands and it's the judiciary system and Cherie Blair that let her take this issue so far. I was very disappointed with the case. The Girl should have f*cked off to somewhere that would tolerate her specific dress code. She has given the school a lot of grief. This school has come so far in terms of getting good grades for the pupils - From being the worst in the area to one of the best.
