RedM
It seems like Golden Brown is planning to introduce a tax of £200 p.a. for large 4x4 and/or cars that produce too much carbon dioxide. Any bets on us and other performance car owners getting robbed as well?

Ark
There's a few things I'd bet (but not my ass, and certainly not my Supra!) that they'll try to screw everyone they can with a windfall tax like that - they normally do. They normally only apply new rules to new cars where it involves fitment of new equipment, such as CATs. Anyway, if you tune your car, surely the CO2 output changes...possibly for the better, so how can they justify blanket policies?
Alex
Will we suffer in the budget? YES - As per usual....and I'm talking about everyone in the UK not just motorists.
RedM
Martin, wouldn't surprise me mate!! Hows the new toy going!! The new toy is amazing. Used it to chase an Evo up a slippery hill near our village. I'm hoping he now thinks Supras handle better than many people say.
Supragal
How are they going to enfore a tax on 4x4s surely it will just be on bigger engines and all 4x4's have bigger engines therefore will fall into the category?
IDO
If i remember correctly it is gonna be all 4x4's.. I think i remember J Clarkson mentioning this when he was racing a marathon runner in a FIAT PANDA 4x4!!!!!!!!!!

I should be ok then, my Supe has very low CO2 emmisions according to the readout I ahd at the MOT station

Faye
How is that fair on people that actuall NEED 4x4s? Farmers and stuff? Just because c*** ends use them like cars? Winds me up. Farmers get red diesel for their agricultural vehicles as long as they aren't used on the road. If their 4x4s were for actual farming land use only I wonder whether they could extend the use of red fuels that way - knowing the goverment probably not, but its just a thought. Other people that truly need 4x4s? any examples? I must admit shy of vets going on to farm land to see cows and stuff I'm struggling to think of any others? Well I was thinking that perhaps they could help themselves by using their 4x4s just on their land with red diesel, but red diesel stains the tank so can then not be used on the road again, it's not just for fields but dont' forget that they have to use roads to transport the animals- sale/shows etc and they need a 4x4 to tow the trailers etc they also move hay/straw all sorts in trailers which weigh tons to need those vehicles to tow. Like you say, vets also. Horse owners- to tow a trailer you need enough power and 4x4 because show grounds are often muddy fields, every show I've been to there is always some donkey who's towed using a mondeo and the clutch has gone or it's stuck in mud or in a rut and someone with a landy is helping tow them out. But how can you distinguish between school runners that like to look cool and that? You'd have to police it- impossible. ALSO, some parents buy 4x4s because they come out tops on safetly test and they want to protect their children.

Forgive me for having little sympathy for horse owners who have to pay a little bit more tax so that they can enjoy their expensive luxury activity. When a horse owner uses their neddy to get to work day in day out then I might have a little more sympathy for them. I'm sure little Grannywho can't heat her own home will be happier knowing that the horsey fraternity aren't suffering too much Parents - there are plenty of cars out there that would do well in safety tests, they are a status symbol nothing else. By the way, my dad has a rather lovely 4x4 ,he accepts that its something he doesn't need, he just loves charging around in it and accepts it for what it is, a gas guzzling status symbol - isn't that what we all drive here though? jaymdee
OK so just read on BBC that cars with highest 1% emissions pay £210. My tax is due, buy I've not rceived my renewal from DVLA. Is this a ploy to make me pay the new amount?? Is this effect immediately. Ie if I take my stuff to post office tomorrow and fill out the form rather than wait till they send anything to me, how much do I pay?? I bloody hate that fat twat!!! Supragal
Hang on I think we are talking about different things here- I am saying that farmers/horse owners etc shouldn't be penalised because other people use the vehicals for stuff they weren't mean to do...ie car stuff. try getting a bale of hay in a car- you'll get 1 in there if you're lucky, you need a bigger vehicle - and I am happy as I am sure all horse owners do to pay extra tax if it is done on engine size etc because it is their choice to have horses but to impose it on 4x4's is wrong is what I'm getting at. I fully agree farmers shouldn't suffer. But I think I'm missing your point about engine size and 4x4s though, you've said you need a 4x4 for towing horses and field work, but presumably you're going to need a powerful one for towing? So you don't mind paying on cc but you would mind if it was on 4x4 (which like more power you need)?

They use slightly more fuel but no more additional than between tax brackets anyway, so you can discount it effectively. What they seem to be getting at is that they are trying to stop people from buying guzzling 4x4's because people use them as car replacements for shopping/school run etc where that capability is not needed, I am saying that that is not fair on people who have an actual use for them to be penalised because of those people mis-using (if you like) them. I'm not sure I am explaining this very clearly though.
Pete
My Kitcar has high emissions and has to pay the highest tax band. I use it about 10-14 days a year. Bring on Taxation monitoring as you travel I say!
geoffvalenti
Rates for pre-2001 registered cars and light goods vehicles in the lower band will be frozen with the higher band increased by £5 Sounds like a bit of a result to me
