ADD
morning all, i dont know if im just being paranoid or whether this is normal but within the note of my exhaust (nur spec/full decat) there seems to be a knocking noise. you cant hear it in the engine bay though. it is worse when the car is cold but still apparent when its hot. any ideas? should i worry or not? cheers
Suprasteve
got more info on the noise. does it do it when stationary or only when moving ? I have the same exhurst but haven't noticed any knocking noises.
ADD
its only when stationary mate, but when you rev over 1500rpm it clears. sounds like......um.....a knocking noise, its very hard to describe!
Suprasteve
dunno mate sorry. Lumpy idle shaking the engine slighty ?
wkdtime
Does it sound like a very slight popping noise from the exhaust? can it be felt in the car?
ADD
def not a popping noise and yes it can be heard in the car! but no higher than 1500rpm
ellis
How old is the zorst? If its an old one it could be the baffles going - my old Zigen (on the NA) started with a small rattle - only at idle - but grew into a death rattle after a month or so! ADD
its only 4 months old, hope its not going already
ellis
Have you tried wobbling the exhaust when the engine's off to see if there's anything loose inside?
ADD
just tried and nothing is lose at all. it sound more engine like....
wkdtime
TBH all i can put it to is that the idle is slightly lumpy, spark plugs? Do you feel the knock when sitting in the car? not hear it but actually feel it so to speak?
supragold
I have had the same zorst for 2 1/2 years but never heard a knocking noise. Is it touching the underside of the car somewhere?
ADD
not knocking on anything under the car and you cant actually feel it when sat down.....never mind but thanks for all your help guys
ADD
sorry to bring this matter back up but the note sounds like a "pulsing" noise, is that good or bad?
pistonbroke
aahhhh, pulsing noise. Like the pulsing noise a scooby makes on idle but not so pronounced?
Suprash
aahhhh, pulsing noise. Like the pulsing noise a scooby makes on idle but not so pronounced? pistonbroke
Oh no, it dont wanna be that pulsing noise, that'll mean its the classic one of your Pistons are Broke.......... Are you being serious, if so, I've never heard of any classic broken piston noise (and my car makes a slight pulsing on idle, I always thought it was down to the shape of the manifold.) EDIT - Does this have something to do with my name?, if so, you'll have to forgive me, I'm blond, its an affliction that has not yet been recognised by the medical profession. pistonbroke
Yeah, the slight pulsing is created by slightly different length maniflold pipes coming from the engine. Aftermarket exhaust exagerate this noise. Listen to a Impreza on idle, it almost sounds like it missfiring due to the same effect.
