Lots of Play? Is this a problem?

I've had a look under the bonnet, and noticed that the two throttle like cables have about 1cm of play before they start to move anything.

As I know nothing about what happens under the bonnet.... I thought I'd open myself up for some helpful advice from fellow members. Or at least a few smart comments.

So... In the Yellow circle, does it matter if there is about 1cm of play, or should I get my local dealer to sort it out?

Thanks in advance, for your help peeps.

Usually all it means is you will have to move the go faster pedal 1cm extra, before you actually go faster.

It can easily be adjusted by undoing the nuts that hold the throttle cable in place. Moving them so the slack is no more, then re-tighten the nuts. Just not too much or you will have it open all the time.

There is a posibility that if the cables are really slack, they will stop you achieving full throttle.

it's easy to tell just put your foot on the pedal all the way, then get an assistant to see if he or she can open the throttle, in the engine bay any further. think of thoes extra horses getting away:p

EXACTLY Steve... NEVER have it tight ! ! ! !:(

hard to say if "1cm" is right ? ? ? but sounds about right ? ?

(can just lift/push the cable up/down a little ? - acc' + Cruise ?)

contrary to belief, the throttle WILL open fully with a little slack there..

get someone to floor the pedal and check the butterfly.... you'll

find it IS on the fully open limit ! !

(I was going to tighten ny CRUISE cable as it feels a bit on/off when

it cuts in/out.. but I decided NOT to tighten it, just in case)

[PLUS, if the cable is dead tight, the SLIGHTEST rest of your foot

on the pedal 'jerks' the acc' slightly.... the 'play' makes control

a little better ! !]

I dont think the throttle arm should be hard against the stop at WOT otherwise the cable is going to be under pretty severe tension, and liable to snap :(

  • 7 months later...

I don't have cruise control , so their is just the one cable.

There does seem to be excessive play in the cable. Nearly all of the adjustment has been taken up and their is still over 10mm of play.

Maybe to have a little is okay but this is reflected in pedal play- the feel of it just doesn't seem right, feels loose.

I cannot imagine Toyota would design it to give this much slackness in the pedal.

Yeah , that's right. Your foot just rests on the pedal.

It doesn't cause any problems, but from a design point of view the play in the pedal doesn't seem right- not this much!

I think the cable must have stretched.

Cannot imagine it was engineered to be like this.
