michael
A bit of sloppy PC building this morning (never build a PC while suffering from Stella effects!) means I now need a new CPU - my existing one is a little.... erm.... dead. I'm looking for a 3.4GHz Intel P4 socket 478 with 2MB L3 cache and 800MHz FSB (Extreme Edition) but would settle for a 1mb version. There are a few on eBay but I'd rather get one from a proper supplier, I also need it asap and can't wait for an auction to end or a seller to decide to visit the Post Office. Any suggestions on places to look for this kind of thing? Cheap as possible please
colsoop
I have had good service from http://www.overclockers.co.uk/ and also http://www.dabs.com/ I believe you can also specify delivery type / speed as well. I don't know if they are the cheapest though.
michael
I checked those two earlier on, neither of them list the faster 'vintage' 478 stuff - I reckon I might end up with a normal one rather than Extreme, having searched the 2mb efforts seem to be £600+ http://www.pcindex.co.uk/showtop.asp?PartID=13016 One on eBay at £375 ' buy it now' and another new listing that's already up to £155 with many days left
Gamer
I have an Intel 3.2ghz, 2mb EE (478) here that I was going to sell shortly. It is currently in one of my other systems. I have not done any reasearch on what the current going rate is on one of these so make me a fair offer and we can take it from there.... michael
I don't think I could afford to give you a fair offer to be honest fella I wasn't really expecting to have to buy one of these so the money comes from the fun budget, I only really have £150 to play with. michael
BTW the going rate seems to be £
Gamer
BTW the going rate seems to be £45 I had better hold on to it and flog it on ebay then Michael, I would have to be a little bit mad to sell it for around £
Gamer
What did you do to the original CPU ? broke pins ?

I'll throw in a copy of 'Brookside: The lost weekend" on VHS too
michael
What did you do to the original CPU ? broke pins ? No, my PSU is modular so you only plug in the cables you need rather than having them all flopping around to remind you - I missed the 4 pin power to the motherboard and powered up to test the newly built system. Next thing I know the motherboard was shouting "CPU failure" I popped an old 1.6 in there and that works fine, the knackered one now smells burnt but looks perfect. I'm a fool! £150, a PS2 and a brand new XBox? Ah well
Gamer
Ouch... £150, a PS2 and a brand new XBox? I am not much of a console games player. I prefer PC games

Lucifer
Extreme is NOT worth the extra money BTW. Go Dual Core.
Gamer
Extreme is NOT worth the extra money BTW. Go Dual Core. He is using a socket 478 mobo so the EE is the fastest you can get for that.
michael
Extreme is NOT worth the extra money BTW. Go Dual Core. I'm stuck with socket 478, I can't go dual core can I? Upgrading the motherboard again isn't an option, it's been a long path to get to this stage and I'm not starting again (With the cash I've spent to be years behind I could have bought a proper PC off the shelf but it's been fun playing) Gamer: £150 and an IBM T20 laptop so you can play 'cutting edge' games like Minesweeper on the move? I'll give up now, I'm looking too desperate.
RedM
Michael, If you want to spend more on a CPU why not flog the pillar pod thingy I've got lying around here?
michael
It's not that I don't have the cash to spend more on the CPU, it's just that I can't bring myself to spend anything major on one, it goes against my Yorkshire ways How is the pillar pod anyway? Found anything exciting to do with it until I get off my ass and get it?
Gamer
Gamer: £150 and an IBM T20 laptop so you can play 'cutting edge' games like Minesweeper on the move? Your going backwards now mate.

RedM
Use for a pillar pod so far: 1. A marble run. Fun for ten minutes or so. 2. Carry device for dangerous pot plants. 3. Part of a scythe for Grim Reaper costume at facy dress. 4. Paint stirrer 5. Device for tripping people up (and by people I mean 'me' and by tripping up I mean 'stepping on' 6. Pretend sniper rifle for shooting people who park across our drive. 7. CENSORED but if we could keep it until next weekend we'd be very grateful. And exhausted! michael
ARGH!!!!!!!!! Bought a CPU, it arrived with bent pins and despite getting these all nice and straight the ******* thing doesn't work, gotta love 'brand new' items on eBay! So once this fool finally responds to me and agrees to take it back / refund cash I'm back on the hunt. Gamer if your's is still for sale do you want to PM me with a price?
