Rahile
hi all can anybody please help tried the search, but to no success. i am getting a rattle coming from...see pic yes i donno what it is:( after driving for about a hour i lifted up the bonnet to help cool the engine and noticed a small rattling sound from that thingy. waited about 15-20mins still there. ignored it. then last night while the engine was cold, i had the battery out (to pop in a new one)it started again. i gave the thingy a little shake and it started to rattle even more, sounded like theres something loose in there. carried on fitted the new batt(Exide Maxxima 900DC)the sound had stopped after 10 mins or so. would be very grateful for any help Rahul
osso
That weird thingy is a Charcoal Canister which is part of the emissions, not entirely sure what is it used for and i've no idea why its needed in the Supra.
Jake
iirc it's a charcoal filter for vented petrol fumes
Rahile
thanks guys charcoal filter hmmm is it suppose to rattle though? does yours? i have noticed pics of some super sooped supes dont have it.
Jake
no of course it's not supposed to rattle. Fix it, replace it or lose it. I think you'll find that it's just one of those things expensive cars have, it's not vital to have vented petrol fumes filtered out, it's a "nice-to-have"
Rahile
thanks very much jake can you or someone tell me part numbers price etc. looks pretty easy to replace does that mean then the charcoal or whatever's in there has broken up? osso
Are you sure its the charcoal canister thats rattling and not the ABS pump next to it?

Thorin
I wouldn't worry about it, I think they all make funny noises.
SimonB
It does make strange noises sometimes, especially when the engine is cooling down, perfectly normal. And it does rattle if you shake it, it's the charcoal inside I presume.
SimonB
Ah, Thorin beat me to it!
osso
The noise is probably caused by the pressure in the fuel tank.. I wonder if you open the petrol cap, the noise stops? This link shows you how the charcoal canister is connected to the rest of the system.. its quite a useful picture actually http://www.mkiv.com/specifications/ncf/ncf93/ncf059.jpg

SkyJawa
The kind of fizzing noise is normal! Noticed it the other day and did a search and everybody's seems to do the same! Don't worry about it!
Paul
just to add and put your mind at rest, mine too makes odd noises. I only noticed it when fitting new headlights and thought WTF is that! Don't worry...................be happy Paul
Terminator
Oh dear not another one, they really should pick this up at SVA. Sorry mate its time to get out your cheque book out. Your MKIV was used as a taxi in Japan and the meter is still running There is a ball bearing none return valve in the canister, under certain pressure conditions the ball is prevented from seating by the pressure and it wobbles about until the pressure is released. Paul Laing
Mine rattles when cooling down, i think it's normal on supras as my last car which was a N/A did the same thing, don't worry about it mate, you could get a replacement, but if it's a normal noise then you have wasted your money, saying that it might not be normal..... Paul Laing
Sounds like it could be due to the pressure, try releasing the fuel cap and see if that sorts it out mate. I'll try that too! I'm assuming everyones cap makes a sound when you take it off to refuel? Both my Supras have done it Paul
dangerous brain
My N/A releases pressure when you take the fuel cap off as well.
Jake
it's not pressure, it's a vacuum isn't it? At least I'd always assumed it was a vacuum, caused by the decreased fuel level. I supposed a vacuum is almost like negative pressure, right ?
dangerous brain
Well yeah you are just bein picky now lol
Paul Laing
Charcoal noise solved!!! after driving my car tonight when i got home, turned off the engine there it was again, that sort of rattling noise from the cannister, all you have to do is unscrew the petrol cap, release the pressure, screw it back on and wahey problem fixed!!!!!
