Dash Rendar
What's the names and IP's of both machines? You'll be needing a hosts file Well, no you don't. Using NetBIOS names, it will attempt a broadcast on the LAN before it resorts to the hosts file. Check out http://www.just2good.co.uk/dns.htm and look at the sections on resolving DNS names and NetBIOS names. So, it should work anyway. I suspect the reason you can't see the machine into you've already connected by IP is because the Computer Browser service polls the network very infrequently. I believe it's in the order of several minutes. If you wait long enough, it will appear.
GeordieSteve
True... but it was easier to talk through dropping a hosts file into a directory than to set up NetBIOS
Dash Rendar
Oh right. True enough, but he's already set up NetBIOS (a few posts back). And DNS resolution will also work across the LAN without the hosts file, but the broadcast happens later on in the sequence. (Not that it makes any difference to the user!) I was just putting that up for info. Either way is cool. (Don't want to tread on anyone's toes!!)
GeordieSteve
I missed where he set up NetBIOS. As mentioned... both will work fine
TLicense
Errr I've no idea what you guys are talking about. Anyway I've placed that file in that directory on both machines. On my PC in explorer I can see my shared folders on my laptop. My shared folder is "car stuff" so the exact path it displays is:- Car stuff on 192.168.0.5 However on my laptop I still can't see any shared directories on explorer untill I type in the IP address in the address bar then it shows all of the shared folders.
