JohnK
Maybe they are hours of a Creation day. If you can build a universe in 6 days, maybe a supra matrix can be swapped in 4 hours. Yea, i'm aware its a massive job, I just wonder what would happen if you asked a garage that gets its times from autodata to do it.
JohnA
They'll most probably call you and give you the bad news, and if you demand that they stick to their original estimate they can always put things back together (perhaps hastily) and ask you to take the car somewhere else. If you get threatening because you're not in the mood to pay double, they could accidentally damage some cables back there in the process (go figure who did what later on) I'd steer clear of clueless garages (who should have known better in the first place) or those who charge you a couple hundred quid to do the job. You pay peanuts, you get monkeys - human nature.
Terminator
If you go to Toyota you'd be lucky to get change from a grand. My suspicion would be that anyone who knows what they're doing will quote too high to deter you from having it done at their place. I had an old scorpio that had a slight leak, I got really stupid quotes like £800 6 years ago. Some places just said no wont touch it. It is a bastard of a job the whole dash has to come out. I had to do thjis on one of my son's cars it took two of us all day to take the old matrix out and fit the new one and stick it all together. Scooter
Could you not use something like this http://www.kalimex.co.uk/section.html?secpath=01.03.&pgid=3 I know its not recommended to use these sealers in the cooling system but you could just flush the matrix itself as i think it has x2 rubber hoses in and out of the bulkhead. So flush the coolant out of the matrix, follow the instructions for the above product, in which it recommends draining all the fluid from the area (this is possible by just blowing through one of the tubes) and leaving over night. Now this means none of the sealer goes in the block, rad water pump etc and only leaves the very small chance of bits breaking off later, but this i'd say is unlikely given that after leaving over night to set you can flush through again with a hose pipe. A few bits of hose, a bit of time and as long as you are patient no risks to the rest of the cooling system...........i'd say that has to be worth a go, no? JohnA
I would never-ever use this sort of 'liquid' fixes in the cooling system of a car I intent to use in the future. Especially if it is a performance car that might overheat in the summer and warp the head (or worse)
