outatime
I have a de-catted 1993 J-spec and just failed an MOT cos of emissions. I know the garage well and told him what Supra Pilot said last week about pre-1995 Imports having a de-cat test. The garage checked their records and reckon ANY car after 1992 (k reg) has to have a cat test! I needed to get through this MOT cos im trying to sort out a no. plate transfer next week:angry: Anyway, the 'MOT man' is coming tomorrow at four, does anyone have the legislation in writing to prove the garage wrong? Cheers.
Marco
There seems to be quite some different ideas gong round about this. I don't know eiter what is correct?! '92, '93? When I had my car MOT'ed last week I put 1 cat back in just to be sure. And it passed 1st time... (I have a '93 BTW)

(I have a '93 BTW) Tell me about it... i did a search and got a load of conflicting info - some reckon its the chassis code some the engine code. Its either 1992,1994,1995 or not at all that the legislation on imports changed. Someone must know? I havent got a spare cat, so thats out the question. I'll see what the MOT man says before I try to track one down.
JamesG
Try this: http://www.imoc.co.uk/technical/faq/mot/mot-cat.gif I don't know what year this relates to, or whether the regulations have changed since then. The important bit is about finding an "exact match for the vehicle". The UK spec supras will be listed, but the Jap ones may not be as the code is preceded by E- Whether this is really correct, I don't know. But I told my local garage this and my car has been subject to the non-cat test for the last two years as a result. (edited to say: that diagram applies to the year 1998) James. outatime
Cheers James, Ive seen that before and Ithink its out of date now. I'll try showing it to the garage anyway, i wont mention its 5 years old
Supra Pilot
The man's a fool! Sorry I won't have access to my manuals till next week to point out the reference. Basically there are no references to J spec(import) supras in any of the manuals(guidebooks), so what a lot of these testers do is use the UK reference and say that ALL cars after 92 blah blah blah etc......'bullshite' Ask him to show you in his reference(guideline) manual the exact requirements and emmision limits for YOUR J spec car! There is none! Good luck, try somewhere else!
outatime
Cheers, ill give it a go. I could take it somewhere else but all the garages round here are run by idiots Ill explain it again, ask him to take me through the guidelines then prove him wrong

That info is now out of date, they should use the BETs test (Basic emissions test) if the VIN number isn't in the database. It's a mess and a grey area, different stations interpret it differently. Easier to throw the 2nd cat on for the test.
