Turbo Noise..HELP!!

GESIT

Recommended Posts

Hi Guys,

Just got a 1998 JAP Twin Turbo RZ-S (Not the Tiptronic). I have had it around 4 weeks now and am really concerned with some noise i am getting from the turbos...i think?

Basically, the turbos are whistling slightly louder than other Supras i have driven, which i don't mind as long as they are not buggered. Paul Whiffin has driven it and said that they ARE louder than normal but nothing to worry about. Here is the issue: At around 30-40mph at around 2-3000 revs i am getting a 'wurring' sound from the turbo's. Paul said he has only seen this once before and thought it may be air getting out somewhere.

Sorry this is not a very descriptive post but i am a virgin when it comes to Supras :(

I have a 3 year warranty with the car, but have no idea who to take it too that would be able to help???

Any help or advice would be great.

Cheers

G

My turbos are clearly audible at those kinds of speed/RPM. If its just a whistle I wouldn't be majorly concerned.

I'm not a techie so can't help too much but my turbo's also whistle alittle louder than some of the other Supra's I have driven.

Have you driven them back to back? Are you sure its not in your imagination?

Welcome to the BBS by the way:)

Steve,

Thanks for the welcome mate.

I have driven 3 Supras back to back and mine is noticebly louder with the whistling....i am not worried about the whistling....in fact its kinda cool:D

The noise that is worrying me is after the first turbo kicks in and is usually at around 2-300 revs and lowish speeds. The sound is quite audible and when Mr Whiffin drove it he heard it too. (Paul if you see this thread maybe you can explain it better technically?)

I am worried that something is not right with the turbo/engine as i also get a problem at higher speeds sometimes when i drop into 3rd (Auto Gearbox) and the revs are at about 5000-5500 and the engine seems like it is stalling...little or no power....then it changes to 4th and were back to serious pulling power.

I want to get the car looked as i am already feeling urges to start tuning:flame Dev

Cheers

Supragal,

Hi, thanks for the support, in answer to your question, yes, it is from JIC. The guys there are really nice, but when i took it back last week, they could not find any technical probs with it and said the noise was possibly from my Yokohama rear wheels? I know it is not the tyres and Paul Whiffin confirmed this also. Maybe i should go back to JIC then?

Scooter,

Thanks for the soundclip link. It is not that sound or anywhere near that bad, but as you hear the turbo failure just start, the sound mine makes is about 1/10th of the noise and not exactly the same but similar.

I am going to email Paul to see if he can describe this better than me.

Thanks again for all your support guys, really appreciated.

Cheers

G

My turbos were whistling loud before I replaced them. Too bad I never recorded the sound, I'm sure it would have been usefull. When Leon took them out, he said some of the ceramic blades were gone, and something quite important (cant remember what he called it) just snapped off!

I hope its not as bad with your turbos...

Its definately not a normal noise, there's something up somewhere, what it is exactly I dont know, sounds like an air leak to me but can't be sure. Beany had the exact same noise on his car, me and Chris Wilson never found anything wrong with that one. Never heard any others make the same noise. I'd take it back to JIC if I were you.

Cheers

Seeing its an Auto...it might be the 'wrong-oil-in-the-autobox-sound' ?

Its VERY hard to place the sound....both myself and the toyota mechanic thought it was turbo-related...until we found it was comming from the gearbox ;-)

Hi and welcome to the right place.

Problems associated with noises are so difficult to identify and even hard to solve over the internet:eek:

The other aspects of the problem you describe are more helpful, but still can be caused by some many different things.

Auto box noises can be very hard to differentiate from other engine sounds.

Your sig says S East so you are close to a lot of experienced owners who I am sure would just love to get in the car with you and have a listen if you can get along to a meet.

A little more detail may also help.

When the car has been back to JIC, how much of a check did it get how long was it with them, did it go to the garage they use?

How many miles on the car?

What mods, induction kit?

Have you checked all the hoses, including the tightness on the big jubilees on pipework above the turbos?

Have you checked the auto box fliud level?

The noise has nothing to do with the gearbox, 100% sure of that.

Morning Guys,

The car has no mods at all. It is an auto with 37,000 miles on the clock.

The noise is gradually getting worse now(more frequent). I am away on business for 2 weeks at the end of this week, so when i return i will take it back to JIC and see what they can do. Paul Whiffin and I know that there is something wrong but cannot pin-point it.

I really appreciate all the messages from you all, it has given me things to think about and more information for JIC.

Thanks

G
