Domestic electrical question

Recommended Posts

I replaced the lightbulb holder/'rose' thing in my garage but it doesn't work.

The power cable has got three wires: Brown, Black and Blue

The new light rose has 2 wires to connect to: 1 brown and 1 blue.

I connected the brown wires together and blue wires together but like I said it doesn't work.

When I put a volt meter across brown and blue there's 0volts. When I put the meter across black and blue, or black and brown there is full main voltage.

That's not how it's supposed to be, is it?

Which wires do I connect to the light rose's brown and blue wires?

Thanks

(I feel like I really should know this - but I don't )

sounds like the garage has been wired in 2 way cable for whatever reason, this is the kind of stuff you would wire hall/landing switchs where there are 2 light switchs, just connect with either your black/blue or black/brown and shove the spare in an empty terminal, the definative solution would be to look in your consumer unit in the house to see how the garage has been wired

Jake did you get this sorted?

Is there a an earth cable there as it sounds like either the blue or the brown the the earth (the other one being the neutral) and the black is the positive! If there are no other cables in the pendant then the wires must go through the switch so it might be an idea to have a look in that!

Hope this helps
