Supra_Al
Hi guys due to my recent scare/possible fine, i'm seriously looking into buying one of these.I know a few guys on here possibly had a 'group buy' on one of the makes?I need a unit that is NOT hardwired into my car,as i drive one of 2 cars. Can anyone give me advice on which unit to buy,how the units perform etc,are they worth the money?I'd want a laser detector too. Many thanks Al. SkyJawa
Road Angel comes with the laser add-on now. Good unit - no probs with mine, and very useful being portable between cars instantly
Supra_Al
Thanks for your reply Neil, lots of views but not many replies!!.....is it because i is a BM driver now?? Terminator
It is a good unit, if you keep it updated, which is easy to do and you should do as soon as you get it. It has certainly made life easier particularly on unfamiliar roads. The accident black spot thing is good too for the same reason, it just sharpens your awareness of potential, but unseen hazards. It has definitely helped me avoid points on more than on occasion I the past month so well worth the money. As for laser, I don’t think these are any good unless you have a jammer as well, the beam it too accurate and quick split second stuff. If you are unlucky enough to get a warning, it just confirms you are nicked if your speed was too high. A friend was driving up the A1 with another type of detector, with laser, over an undulating section. As he came over a crest he got a warning, but could see no van or anything, but slowed down any way. After the next crest he saw a van in the distance. The van was just focusing on the first crest from 1/2 to 3/4 a mile away. No chance. He got a NIP last week. He’s on 9.points now. Swapping the Angel from car to car is so quick, I have used mine in 5 cars now, wow are those speedos useless. Don’t think it will win any design awards though. I recommend it for its ease of use and ease of swapping between cars.
MONKEYmark
i just picked up another 3 points this week, was when i went to santapod. i cant remember getting flashed. i was doing 36 in a 30 in wellingborough. a bit too late for me. im on 6 points now feel like a criminal. is the angel just mainly for gatso cameras? what is a very good all round one that gets lots of speed cameras feel like pulling a camera down. Supra_Al
.....around here, i've heard of people getting prosecuted for doing 43mph in a 40!! If this isn't blatant revenue raising i don't know what is. Al.
Terminator
The angel relys on a GPS map so long as the camera is on a map it will tell you no matter what type it is. There may be better forms of detection, but most have to hard wired in, so you would need wiring kits for each car. The angel is just plug_and_play via the cig lighter. If you want complete protection, if there is such a thing I think you need more than one detector. Matt H can help here.
eyefi
im looking at all this stuff at the moment and i think there's a massive gap in the market for a full protection (gps/radar/laser diff) integrated system. the snooper s6r neo & diffuser looks about the best to me but it carries a nice (not) price tag
Tom
For everyone's info, 5th gear tonight 8.30 on 5 they are doing a scetion on legal and illegal camera detectors which i think will be worth watching.

As the units are sold as garage door opening mechanism of some sort on the packaging, I assume you would need to buy an electronic garage door aswell? Or would this not be proof enough??? Possibly, but if a laser gun is being used on you and you have a jammer will this mean that even if its worked that they've got your numberplate and can just do a suprise visit on you to find the jammer as they know your using one?? Terminator
Surely they would have to activate the camera to take a pic of the 'no reading' to catch the number plate, I thought those things were programmed to automatically take a pic if the speed limit was exceed and not if you are under the limit or no reading was available. This link suggest that it required more that a single camera incident to alert police. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/wales/2744329.stm
Adam W
I think you have it right Phil. There have been no prosecutions for use of a jammer at the moment, I think because they're so rare the police can't be bothered creating a "strategy" to deal with them so they just ignore invalid readings. Even if they did try to prosecute you there is a big grey area in the law about this, all you're doing is emitting light after all. I believe some guy in wales was being threatened with prosecution, but nothing ever came of it.
Adam W
The link above was the guy I'm talking about . . . nothing ever happened to him in the end AFAIK. Anyone, consider the odds of getting nicked for having a detector against the number of speeding fines you're likely to rack up in a year without one. Tom
I see, it might be worth getting a jammer anyway, did they say it was another £300 on top of a gps system??
Faith Adopter
I'll be fitting my eletronic garage door at the weekend Terminator, How did you fit this? (ie which wire did you hook the power to, i presume it was the ignition and please do you have any photos?) I will also be fitting mine at the weekend and just wondered whether there were any pointers as i also have a turbo timer and alarm/immob fitted, will the turbo timer present any difficulties when fitting?? Thanks:) :)
oxygene
My Road Angel is busted right now. It won't pick up any satellites and if it does, only briefly. Gonna hit Blackpost in the next couple of days to see what they can do. I went up to them a couple of months back and they flashed the BIOSof the RA and it seemed to work for a week or two, but now it has bombed out again So Im sorta driving blind, speedo is quite a way out and Road Angel was my speedo when it worked. Plus as well the camera detection side, my licence is currently clean, don't want anymore points.
