Pissing Contest!

VIL

Recommended Posts

Just a bit of a winge.

I have been on the forum for some months now and on the whole its very informative with some great characters. However, I do sometimes feel its a bit of a `pissing contest` on some topics.

As an example on the `Tech Forum`, some of us are clearly less technical than others and we rely on the knowledge and help from other members. In these instances some members use it as a opportunity to `flex` their superior knowledge to make you feel like a t**t for asking the question in the first place and ultimately dont help at all.

Is it me or does anyone else sometimes feel the same way?

VIL, i would agree. Im yet to have it 'ripped out me'......yet, but have so far found everyone has been a great help, especially with recent events :) sometimes things can go a little off topic, dont get me wrong its good to have a little bit of a laugh, but we were all here to learn :)

Really VIL? I hadn't noticed this but I haven't been on here quite as much as usual lately.

To be fair, as long as I've been on here mkivsupra.net has always been full of piss-takers but it's usually 'bad form' to mess about in the Tech Forum.

Are there any posts in particular you're thinking of?

There's a lot (maybe too much) banter on the chat forum lately but not noticed too much on the tech side. That should be kept to what its meant for.

The membership of this club has changed drastically in the last year and its not added to the forum content at all (Flat_4ire is a classic example). Unfortunately many of the more experienced and knowledgeable members are giving up posting on the forum - that can only be a bad thing.

I'll admit, I felt a bit 'put out' in the post I made about myself getting banned (Car Storage I think it was called), but after reading again what people had put, I could see where they're coming from (Note to me : Should have put another post up explaining everything, which would have taken ages!!)... And the way I posted it, I asked for it...

But apart from that, I've read many many threads on here (Probably not posted as much as I should have, but I'm a Supra Newbie), and usually found most people to be polite and informative...

What on earth would you feel put out about? Everyone was very non-judgemental in that thread. All replies were were very mild compared to what you would get on any other forum after admitting drink driving.

Thicker skin needed maybe.

Yep thats it though I've been on the forum a reasonable amount of time and although I will answer questions for newbies I tend to get them by searching.

I just think that the search button is under used by some not just newbies. People who inform them off this are just identifying a resource of the site they may not be aware of

I don't know what the hell you guys are whining about. If you were to post questions like what does the red button do? Is jap faster than UK etc.... on other forums you'd have the shit ripped out of you and the post locked or deleted. I don't agree with it myself but on SF or even other car clubs in the UK they are 3 times as bad as on here.

As Ian says the search button is under used and i admit i fall foul of this too sometimes.

What I was trying to say in my first post is I sometimes wonder at the `way` some people come across on this forum.

Are they attempting to be helpful (as you would hope) or just making a post to show how clever they are without actually helping at all!

There are various levels of knowledge on the forum on all topics (not just the tech section) and are we not all on here to learn from each other?

I just sometimes feel that on more than a few occasions there seems to be the odd `pointed` comment introduced to a thread that is not helpful, or required.

You can't stop people buying Supras, and the chances are if someone does they will join this club. If you don't like them, keep away. If older members move off because the don't like a new person, seems a bit of an odd reason to me?

Darren- I agree this can be off putting, sometimes it's presumed it's through laziness but as in your case and many others thats not the case.

Pot- I don't remember you being banned? I must have missed something, migth have a read of that thread and see what happened.

It's age old and echoed in life, there are those with the quiet knowledge that they pass on and those with a bit of knowledge that like to use it as a rod of power.

Personally I have a good group of mates on here that I know would answer any technical questions I have (john, terry mig etc etc) and were anything to need their attention I have no doubts they would help without question (although it might cost me a beer :) )

I think some people take too much to heart, it is the internet and not a local social club, take everything with a pinch of salt and dont get bothered by things, at the end of the day, the red X in the top right corner solves any forum issues you may be having that day.

This is why I'm putting together the Wiki (when I get some God damn time) - all the straight forward answers will be there and hopefully stop people asking basic stuff time after time after .....

Whats a WIKI I did do a search but couldn't find it please don't :flame: me :)

Im not very technical but i always try and help people with my very limited knowledge. However i always point people to the SEARCH button there is so much info there that answers almost every problem that we supra owners encounter, mind you there was one thread recently that annoyed me someone didn't know how to check their water and they had the piss taken which i think is wrong.

It will never happen. With reference to the "Red button" topic above, this is covered in the "Guide to the Supra" which is shown as a link in several places to newbies, on the reg form, at the top of the forum when signed in, on the home page and other places too. In it is a clear description of what the red button does. So despite this resource being plugged all over the place it was obviously missed/ignored and the question asked anyway.

So I predict that with the introduction of the wiki we will not stop questions about the red button, but instead of the answer being "Use the search" it will become "Use the wiki" instead!

Although I hope that saying "use the wiki" will hopefully be a more usefull an anwser as it should be much easier to find what you're looking for than via the search button, which in a lot of cases just finds more threads asking the same question and with the same "use the search button" answers!
