whitesupratt Posted March 2, 2006 Share Posted March 2, 2006 Ok, so I STILL have the rear wiggle and the rear end skipping whenever hitting a tiny bump, and my steering wheel is still off centre when driving straight. Iv had wheel alignment done twice, its not that...so i took it to two garages, and they both say it purely that my rear tyres are totaly smooth (bald) and worn and distorted. I can believe screwed up a worn tyres can make hadling bad, but... 1) can that make the steering off 2) The car also seems to now have rock solid suspension at the rear, when i hit a tiny inperfection in the road, its as if my suspensio has been replaced by solid bump stops. Steve W Posted March 2, 2006 Share Posted March 2, 2006 THINK ours might be stiff rear shocks causing it TOO, but just been too damn lazy to check 'em:rolleyes: Ours FOUR-wheel aligned. NEW tyres. BUT, 18's and very jolty/stiff over small bumps/manholes etc. and gives that very insecure jiggle/kick from side to side it DOES seem to get better as the tyres(?) or shocks(?) warm up, and is better on warmer days etc......... I had the same problem with mine where the back end would step out over the tiniest crack in the road....caused it sorts of scary moments. Most of the peeps here advised me to change the rear tyres first and so i did and it sorted the problem. I have el cheapo federals on there and its been fine for 3-4 months but im getting the same problem again so due to tyres again as well. Will be going for some quality tyres on it now and not some cheap shite. I think that coupled with knackered bushes & ball joints all having their contributing factors on a 10+ year old car. Ive always found the shocks to be stiff during cold weather or if the car has been stationary for a few hours and find it "softens" up a little during use. Id have new tyres and a proper 4 wheel alignment done and go from there...after that i guess will be drop links & bushes etc Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
jamesmark Posted March 2, 2006 Share Posted March 2, 2006 what set up have you got on your soop, for a moment forget the wheel alignment as you have said you have had it done, forget the tyres i got a set of koni's and eibachs and although they are not adjustable the dampening is, so if it is set hard at the back it will jump and will be skittish and that aint good for a rear wheel drive car, you have to have a soft setting at the back and a hard setting at the front i would seriously check that but again it all depends on the dampening setting if that is applicable Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

The way I see it, I need tyres no matter what as they are on the fabric, so if its not them thats causing the fault, there's no money lost! Homer Posted March 2, 2006 Share Posted March 2, 2006 If your rear tyre's are seriously worn then replace them right away - it will make a HUGE amount of difference to the handling. Good year F1's or Michelin pilot sports (if you're wealthy!) are highly recommended. What springs, dampers and wheels do you have? Ideally get them as close to stock as possible in order to troubleshoot the problem. There no point replacing everything and doing alignment if you have some 'upgraded' suspension or 19inch wheels.... Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Jonny5 Posted March 2, 2006 Share Posted March 2, 2006 I've just eliminated the very same problem your having with my UK TT6. I blamed the tyres at first, kept kicking out over drain covers and bumps, and it made me feel as though I needed to apply a small amount of opposite lock lol:D I've since put brand new tyres on which helped alot, but it was still there, albeit ever so slightly.. So I got some replacement shocks good old yellow billies in exchange for the the standard tokico which were fitted.. As I had taken the rear shock (passenger side) off it had about 40mm of freeplay in it (doing zilch) until it firmed up as it should...FUBAR basically.. and on fitting the new shocks the problem has now totally dissappeared and she feels absoloutly planted now;) hope this helps and makes some sense lol.. For what it takes I'd whip your rear shocks off, split 'em and check 'em wheres that second botkle le vino.... cheers Jon Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

My supra just so you all know is TOTALY stock! as out of the factory, all be it in 1993! stock everything, body, wheels, mechanics etc If its totally stock and still behaves badly then its going to be knackered bushes, shocks or springs. Springs ae unlikely so easiest option it to check the shocks. Somewhere on the forum is a post explaining how to test & replace the shocks...
