Homer
I'm going to be replacing the cam cover gaskets this weekend (after reading TLicense’s excellent write up here http://www.mkivsupra.net/vbb/showthread.php?t=49859 ) but am a bit unsure on which gasket sealant to use. There seems to be two types - hardening and non-hardening. Which type should i use for the cam gaskets?
Ian C
You don't. The rubber gasket is designed to seal the cam covers properly without gunk. -Ian
Homer
Thanks Ian. If no sealant is required then thats a lot less hastle :-) However, In Tony's guide it states : "With that done you can now go ahead and fit the cam-covers. Once again use the sealant where the cam cover goes over the no.1 bearing caps. Make sure you remember to place the washers under the nuts bolts and tighten them to 5.4Nm" Could anyone confirm what it says in the service manual? Ian C
I know the bit you mean - I recall using Hermatite Red to seal that specific area on my MkIII once, but I swapped the cams on my MkIV a few years ago and don't think I actually used it then. In fact I've had the cam covers off at least twice and I can't recall ever using the gunk on them and I have no leakage from there at all. It's up to you -Ian
LeeT
ive changed my cam covers twice too and never used sealant. never had any problems either

Cheers I replaced the cam covers on my car recently and bought some new gaskets they were only £7.00 each, so for £14.00 dont you think it is worth it? I considered using the old gaskets, but when you compare the new ones, which are large and thick and have plenty of give in them - I would go with new! Besides, that sealant gets everywhere and you will get annoyed with the mess you make!
Chris Wilson
Blue Hylomar
TLicense
Yeah, blue hylomar will do the trick. Certainly a lot less expensive than the Toyota stuff. About £30 odd IIRC. The only place you need to put it is in the corners where the gasket goes over the number 1 bearing caps. You just put it there to stop any seepage of oil in the corner as it will be pretty difficult for the gasket to give a good seal.

supradibbs
i have changed probably 30 sets never used anything never had a problem
Digsy
Yeah, its not unusual to use a liquid sealant under number one cam caps. Also, a THIN bead of a non-silicone RTV doesn't hurt along the edges where the cam cover seal goes up and over the cap, ad cam cover seals usually have trouble sealing sharp in corners.
