Anyone using a HTPC? (Home Theatre PC)

Jake

Recommended Posts

I want to build a HTPC with my new Hi Def TV so that I can upscale DVD and TV to HDTV-like quality....

...but I'm a complete newb at this stuff and could really do with some help from someone who's already got the tee shirt.

I know there's forums on the net for this kinda stuff but they assume a certain level of knowledge that I just don't have yet. Anyone here willling to help me through the basics ?

Thanks

WTF is htpc ???

:rlol:

I've not seen a home theatre PC that I've been happy with the video output quality.

In my mind you really need a decent component output on the video to your HDTV and a decent sound card with very low noise interferance (ie, not onboard rubbish). Problem then is you end up with a big box PC in your front room.

I'm not sure what the advantage of "upscaling" a dvd output on the PC will do that the screen doesn't do internally itself (with dedicated chips). I guess if you down load HDTV DivX from the states then that's a bonus.

The SVHS output on most of these small home gizmos just doesn't cut the mustard with me.

In saying that, it's been a while since I looked into this. I note Sony do them now - I'm sure they're pretty good.

Jake, I've spent quite a lot of time putting my HTPC together and setting it up. I'm using MCE2005, which is sufficiently good that I always watch my TV through it. I've also set up an Xbox Media Extender, so I can stream live TV wirelessly across my network to elsewhere in the house. It all works really well now :)

Any questions, just ask and I'll see if I can help.

I'd be interested to know the spec you've got James.
