Bobbeh
I have it and enjoy it, but I wouldnt jump up and down about it. Its useful if you want to download big files quicker, thats all. I've rarely got full speed out of it too... for example your test tells me im not even over 7.5mbit! Latency wise its the same as the other options. MONKEYmark
i just tested and got this, its all new and amazed at speed.downloading on newsgroups is fast.but i suppose it will wear off downloading all the time.running out of things to download,or downloading for the sake of it. some web pages still take a while to load.pretty impressed.what modem do you use Bobbeh? Your current bandwidth reading is: 10.92 Mbps 11184.8 kbps YOU which means you can download at 1.37 MB/sec. from our servers
colsoop
I agree with Bobbeh, it is good for large files, and gaming. The speed isn't a constant 10mbps like they would have you believe though. It tends to be quickest for me early hours of the morning. Mind you having said that:
JamesG
I'm on the NTL 2Mbit service and would love to upgrade to 10MBit, but I read that if I moved to the new service, there would be a maximum download limit of 75Gb/month. Anyone know if this is still true?

Pete
Crazy speeds. No home user needs more than 2Mb IMHO. Its to only be illegal file swappers that are pushing demand. Video on demand works perfectly well at 2Mb.
Bobbeh
Crazy speeds. No home user needs more than 2Mb IMHO. Thank god you dont control who gets what! They've had 50 mbit connections as standard in scandanavian countries for years, there is no reason boradband why it cant just be like a LAN, and with 10mbit it is. I'm using some NTL Home grey one that I got supplied by NTL when the one I bought stopped working. I've never had over 750k a sec downloads so I think either my area is slow or there is a limit on my modem, which shouldnt be the case as it should be able to take a lot more abuse. A lot of the time you're limited by the site you're going too, they dont always have the same capacity to send data at the speed you are able to receive. But for gaming, it makes no difference if you're on 128kbps cable or 10 mbit, its not using a massive amount of bandwith so its not an issue, its all about the ping/latency. I used to work for another BB company, not NTL, be we both use similar types of network delivery. Phone support and ask to register the MAC address (or HFC MAC ID or USB CPE MAC ID depending if youre using USB or ethernet) of the new ntl:250 you've bought with them (i.e. to replace the MAC address of the NTL 120 they already have for you on your account). It wont work without doing this as when you turn the modem on, the modem MAC address is supposed to be the same as the one they have registered on your account. Once the Cable Modem MAC address is registered, turn the cable modem off. Leave it off for a bit, then boot the PC connected to teh cable modem. Once booted to desktop, boot the cable modem. Make sure that there are no problems by checking the light status on the front of the modem. Hopefully the support guy will sit with you through this, though they may say it will take a few hours. If so, ask them to send a "hit" (P.S. Im unsure if they still do this). If everything is okay on the front of the cable modem (sorry Im not familiar with the front panel of the ntl modems), hopefully windows has already found the network connection automatically. If not, check what your IP address is and reboot modem or windows - one at a time NEVER both together - and check again. Be aware its possible you may be without the internet for a few hours whilst this goes through, or then again it may go really smoothly. One last thing, from what I remember the 1st line support people were not allowed to change the MAC addresses of cable modems as some, well, you just couldnt let them..., only competent managers (who knew how), installation techs who phoned their HQ and 2nd/3rd line line support guys so if they say they cant do it, ask to speak to 2nd line or a manager who is able to do so. When everything is connected and you have a valid IP address again download and run this, but first make sure you have nop P2P running first. Its very good and the output is useful to give to support people as it will help find if there is a potential problem. You can get it here: http://www.webattack.com/get/bbspeedtest.html BTW do you have a Netgear WGT624? Ive had loads of problems with that as well...
