RedM
I've heard a lot about cars being set up for Japanese roads and that that's no good when they get over here. What are their roads like? Smooth as glass with no potholes, bumps and drain covers or are they grippier or what?
Bill Prawn
What are their roads like? Black with white lines!!!
michael
What are their roads like? Busy and in better condition that ours
stevie_b
They're similar to the UK, from I can remember. The usual occasional sunken drains/ potholes in city centres, motorways (or whatever they call them) and other main roads I think were well maintained. Probably a bit better maintained than UK roads. RedM
So what are people on about when they say a car is set-up for Japanese roads and is no good over here?

RedM
But I've read it so many times. Suspension too hard and the car too low seem to be the problem when the car gets here.
Jspec Germany
The roads are far better in Japan from what I've experienced (4 years there). Even in Okinawa where a type of coral is used in the manufacturing process causing them to be very slick in the wet. They build and repair their roads ten times faster and better than anywhere else I've been in the world. Like ants they are.
Gaz Walker
The japanese roads are leaps and bounds better than here. The highways (Wangan) are maintained like the German Autobahn, they are perfect. Some of the side roads aren't as perfect but are very good. Very few potholes. People in Japan care about things like that - if it was outside someones house they'd fix them!

Exactly. A team can replace a couple of MILES of highway in one night in Japan. It would take a contractor here several weeks Gaz.
RedM
Hmmm, so with having better roads they can get away with running harder set-ups etc. I think we should send the DoT over there for pointers.

b_have
Super clean as well! When I was there, my gf (Jp) was amazed to see me throw a Ciggy out of the window
Jspec Germany
Yeah, they don't litter there and people clean up outside their homes and along the roads and streets. Guys in flashy worker vests walking up and down the street every weekend picking up trash. It really was a beautiful place, Okinawa.
Gaz Walker
Super clean as well! When I was there' date=' my gf (Jp) was amazed to see me throw a Ciggy out of the window [/quote'] You didn't! When I was in Osaka, every morning they cleaned and then washed pavements, highway, road signs, bins etc outside. Regards, Gaz.
RedM
We've got it all wrong over here, haven't we? It disgusts me when I see the amount of crap left lying around on our streets and verges. Supra meet in Tokyo anyone?
Jspec Germany
You know why dude? It's because people in our countries could give a sh*t about how it looks. The Japanese take pride in theirs.

RedM
Should have thought about that. The Japanese seem to be obsessed with the apearence of things. Take Kendo (a sport i do) for example. You can get a good hit on your opponent but ultimately if it doesn't look right you don't score! I wonder what would have to be done to instill the same level of pride in our nation as they have in theirs.
b_have
As my gf is Japanese, I travel to Tokyo once a year to see her family. It always amazes me how polite, good humoured and intelligent Japanese people are. They are workaholics and strive to be the very best at whatever they do. There is practically no crime, no violence. The streets of Tokyo are safe to walk at 4am. Oh and most have no relgion. food for thought...
RedM
No religion. What about Shinto and Buddhism? Although, I'll admit they do seem to be observed only at special occasions. Any tips on cheap flights to Japan?
b_have
Always paid around £500 but if you can, fly JAL or ANA, got a free upgrade to business class last time and was treated like a film star!
RedM
Cheers for that. I'm going to have to go sometime soon. I've been a Japanophile (if I haven't just made that word up) since I was a kid. I'd like to go for a month. Really get to see the country. I'd also like to do Kendo in Japan too. Training twice a day every day would be really good. One day....
b_have
You wont wanna come home! Try to learn some basic Japanese, It will earn you huge respect no matter how bad you sound! (I've been learning for three years now and still struggle!)
RedM
I did a year of evening classes and, well, I'll be fine if all I need is to visit a department store or to thank my Sensei for the opportunity of being soundly beaten with a walloping Men cut. I'm going to enrol in some classes again, I think. My better half bought me some learn Japanese cds for xmas too. Maybe she's hoping I'll bugger off.
