Custom made springs

I have lately been in contact with an ex-employee of Tein the spring manufacturer, this chap makes the specials for the likes of the 230mph Skylines etc, he is able to manufacture springs to any rate you require, you give him the numbers and he tells you whether that is a good figure or not and if HE likes the final numbers he makes them, he can make dual rate and full race jobbies! he also is the only guy out there who 'prangs' his springs prior to delivery, pranging is where the spring is made to a little over size and is 'stamped' on and off with a bout 150% of its designed load for just 1/10 of a second, this evens out the tensions within the metal itself and makes the spring behave more fluidly, he can re brace to size and if there is a little difference in height (upto 3mm he includes clasping shims to accomodate) I have a set of his in my garage they are of exceptional quality.

They are about £400/450 for all four.

If you are unsure of the rates for the Supra I can supply a list of about 10 for comparison.

This is serious performance stuff as you can even specify the ride height, anything you like, my little beauts are; -20mm front; -15mm rear.

I was amazed how quickly the whiteline springs sagged, the rest of the kit seems to be good according to those who have it, but the springs do seem a little iffy.

I dont think anybody took up the offer, I know Chris Wilson does custom suspension jobs and a few people have used him.

The BEST springs come from good old Sheffield, the home of steel making for donkeys years, the town has a rook of makers who know more about spring steel than the rest of the world put together. Whether it's a leaf sring, coil spring, valve sring or killing knife Sheffield still has the "old boys" and "new technology" to come up with the goods. Eibach pro stuff is great, but the good old UK still can produce world leading spring steel and cutting steel technology.

I recall a German medical convention where the Krauts were cock a hoop about the latest, thinnest hypodermic needles fro eye surgery. Nothing was finer. Sheffieled made a needle that was hollow, that went down the INSIDE of the Kraut one. No great medical value, just to *iss them off :-)

Not saying other countries don't make GOOD springs, just no need to pay duty and carriage on stuff from abroad, spring wise. the Krauts and Netherlands still make the best dampers (shocks) though. A shock absorber is a real misnomer, a "shock" is really a "damper". Its sole function to dampen spring and thus chassis oscillations.
