Boost Controller - Which one?

Recommended Posts

I am looking to purchase a Boost Controller for my J-Spec TT. Is there a particular make/model that is recommended and do I require anyother eqpt to run the Bosst Controller safely on my car.

Just out of interest what boost can I run safely on the car before I need to purchase safety mods etc. My current mods are as follows.

Blitz Nurspec R Exhaust

2nd Cat removed

HKS SPF Induction kit

In Increasing my boost what gains in BHP can I expect and just out of interest, what boost will I approximately be running at the moment.

Cheers

Vaughany,

I notived no one replied so....

I would recommend an Apexi Boost controller and running a max of 1.2 bar (maybe turned down to 1.0bar in hot sunny weather)

You'll need a fuel cut defencer as well.

Change of spark plug temp grade plus removal of 1st catalytic converter as well.

You'll be looking at a quick car then.

Later a front mounted intercooler to help cooling.

If you need any help contact me direct on 02476 362144

I'm only in Coventry.

Regards

Pete

thanks for the advice, a couple of questions though.

* Taking into account my existimg mods, what level of boost would I be running at the moment. Also could you clarify the following. I noticed sometimes boost is measured in bar and other times PSI. what is the difference and is there one.

* A fuel Cut Defenser, I have heard that these are bad as they only disguise the detonation and dont stop it. By having one of these on you are stopping the ecu from doing its job and risk blowing up the engine. Is this true?

I have recently had my plugs replaced with TRUST Racing plug No 8, are these anygood and do they meet the required spec you mentioned.

Man thanks

Hey Guy - poor old Peter is a working bloke - how long you got?

:p

Bets to check out some of the past threads on

Levels of Boost

FCD (pete's is the best and HIGHLY required!

Spark Plugs

There are loads to look at!

IMHO I like the Blitz SBC-ID for it's looks - not sure about what it does over the Apexi however:thumbs:

I'm interested to see this too. I'll be in the market for a boost controller (when funds recover after shelling out on new tyres to replace the crap it was supplied with!), and Pauls got me pretty tempted with the Blitz :p ;)

Would be good to know if theres any reasons to go with different makes like Apexi AVCR, HKS EVC, Greddy etc....

Thats the problem I've got at the moment. Had the restrictor ring put in an April and it held fine at 1.1bar, but now I've got a new intercooler and its dropped in temperature I'm getting 1.3bar. Dont want to hold it at that for too long.

Yeah super clever thats me, honest. :D

No it's just a bleed valve ! :innocent:

As I understand it, the difference between electronic and manual is that the electronics adjust a solenoid to COMPENSATE for changes in air temperature (in turn oxygen density, in turn boost made) and load etc..........

Probably b*llcks but it makes sense to me :baa:

I hear ya! So how does you manual contoller adjust for the changes in air temp/density?

If it does that by itself I think I will get one as opposed to an electronic type. I thought they were just a Knob that you twisted to get more or less boost.

It obviously manually adjusts the solenoid to give your more or less pressure.

Do you think it's worth getting a electronic type?

A completely stock car will make more boost on a cold day.

Manual boost controllers like mine are fixed to a position that you choose, but the outcome will still vary with the air temp.

Like I say electronics compensate for this, by bleeding more or less air, to hold a SET boost level.

I would still get an electronic if I had the money.

Yes it has a 37 number code along the length, each number is about 1/2" wide when in use.

Joking aside, what does the controller look like? It sound like a normal DSBC which really isn't a bad thing.

Automatically reduces boost to a little over 1 bar on a hot day.

Sorry, when you said this I thought you meant that your manual boost controller compenstaed for the change in ambient conditions. What you were actually saying is that the ambient conditions effect what bboost your car runs:)

Yeah, thats what I thought!:)
