tt red supra
Hi Im currently a new tt-supra owner and a new mkivsupra member..... I just have purchased a 1996 tt supra with a bit of spec and dismorning i went to start the car and it would start for 2-5 sec and than just cut out, if you start the car and give it approx half trottle it would stay running, but with one of the times i tried to start it when the engine died i heard a bad enough rattle coming from the rear of the car... My opinion is : 1- fuel pump on the way out 2- dirty petrol Also just to add the car was running sweetly yesterday and ran perfect when i start it at half trottle. but then id stop the engine it needed half trottle to get back into life..... Any help would be greatly appreciated...... Hope yee all can help me out,,, james...
JohnA
It could be one of several things. Has the fuel filter ever been changed?
tt red supra
unsure about the filter....... but their was a metel on metel type noise coming from the rear....
JODY T
Lets just hope it was the exhaust rattling, when the engine stalled.. Good Luck
tt red supra
i personally think its the fuel pump but has any one else had or heard of this problem?????????????
Chris Wilson
Fuel pumps don't rattle. They MAY whine fairly lodly when worn or sucking air. Just take it to a specialist, there are so many posts about odd faults on here at the moment, where people seem to spend weeks trying to chase down problems that specialists would nail in an hour. It doesn't make economic sense to me, I don't see how people can afford to waste so much of their OWN time, rather than pay for an experts time, but much less of it In 35 years of engine work at all levels i have come across "dirty petrol" once, and water in fuel (bought from a filling staion) twice. I doubt it will be dirty petrol. About the only thing that the engine can make knock at the rear, with the car stationary, is the exhaust against the bodyshell. bignum
have you had the battery off, mine keeps stalling during relearn process.
tt red supra
bignum--- I only bought the car 1 week ago.... and the previous owner had it parked up for 4-5months.. Chris Wiilson--- I know it sounds odd, just have the car for one week so im new to the whole supra thing... i know a specialist would prob know but one of them in ireland is hard to come by... thats the reason why im asking other supra owners for their expert advice.... Do you think it could be more serious that i previously thought...
merckx
Worth checking for fault codes, this can indicate if something isn't working properly. You can do this yourself. Click here

RedM
Have you tried turning it off and on again?
tt red supra
No when i got the car started i drove it straight home approx 2miles and it drove and idled perfectly... Im very concerned that it could have left me stranded some where, so thats why i havent started it since, just trying to do dome brain storming with other people first... Ian C
Does it idle cleanly and then just die or does it lump around at low revs and sputter out? -Ian
tt red supra
Ian C--- it idles cleanly for say approx 5-7seconds and than the revs drop rapidly and it dies.... Just to add i started it their 20 min ago and it went first go.. idled perfect.. after approx 5min i stoped the car and went to start it again and once again it was back to its old tricks, idleing and than dieing............ ardasaliah
Has the big red triangle lit up at all? The one that goes bright red when the handbrake or door is opened. If it stays on whe n all doors are closed and handbrake is down then you have a stored fault code.
tt red supra
jurgen---- advice taken..... was thinking that would have been the best option..
