Guest A7_UFO
Hi all New to the world of Supras having spent 10 years in the world of VW. Have found an imported Supra for sale that is perfect in my eyes, apart from the fact it is an automatic. Not knocking automatics before I offend anyone, but consider 140bhp transmission loss a bit too much and prefer manual. Is it do'able to change auto to manual? Does anyone do a sequential conversion as an option? Thanks in advance Simon

Bill Prawn
Hi all 140bhp transmission loss a bit too much Have I missed something? Manual has 140bhp more than an Auto. When did that happen?
Alex
Have I missed something? Manual has 140bhp more than an Auto. When did that happen? Com'on we all know n00bie's know best. I'd say 140bhp is feesible if your Supra has about 800BHP to start with
Bobbeh
Yeah, you're only gonna lose that much bhp if you're running with a monster! Its been said/quoted 25% loss for an auto through the drivetrain onto a rolling road dyno on a standard car give or take. Assuming your car has 320 to start you will only lose 70 ish bhp to whats recorded at the rear wheels. anyway

Guest A7_UFO
The one I'm looking at has 595bhp at the fly and 455bhp atw.
Bobbeh
Sounds like its a bit of a monster then Got any pics/spec?
JohnA
Indeed, impressive stuff, not many 600bhp (give or take 5bhp) cars in the UK, are there....
Alex
The one I'm looking at has 595bhp at the fly and 455bhp atw. So as they haven't dyno'd the engine on a bench they mean it's 455atw....which could be 20-25% more at the fly...so at most on a crap autobox you'd see 568 at the fly. I'd bet it was closer to 520 though... What's the spec? What turbo?

Bobbeh
No. Lots claimed though. The potential is there in turbo kits, but the higher boost levels and tuning for decent fuels arnt. I dont hear of many singles in this country running over 18psi.
JohnA
well what are we supposed to say FFS? You know, mine is practically stock. When I had it on a hub dyno (running *below* 18psi max) the guy commented on how it was making more power than many 'single' supras that had been there. Read: even the ones with *potential* to be seriously powerful might well be bodged and mistuned lol...
BURT
but say you had a bl auto box, would your 1/4 mile times be faster than the the equivilant bhp manual car?
JohnA
For drag starts, I'd take the manual any day. I still can't get decent starts with the auto

I saw a T-78 @ 1.4 bar put out 520 to the hubs, that sounded about right, compared with what it can put out at higher boost numbers, that was an auto too. Paul Whiffins first single kit put out 450 ish to the wheels a few years back on a PHR1 kit I think. His was a manual and I dont know how that was setup. This guys numbers dont sound too unrealistic to me.
mikeysupra
well i got a manual N/A and a mush near me got a 398bhp tt auto from standing start i kill him no problem for about 150yards:D then once he,s going i get wiped out like i,m going backwards:( unless you planning on alot of 1/4 mile runs i don,t think auto or manual matters really they both bloody rapid. most of the big big monsters run auto,s anyway!! all soops rule:Pling:
JohnA
This guys numbers dont sound too unrealistic to me. Maybe they're not, ve shall see... I guess I'm still under the influence of the various TOTB reruns on M&M where the top supras didn't really shine (to put it mildly) The supra has the largest capacity for crying out loud so it should have a headstart. (talking to myself now)

(talking to myself now) Yeah but don't forget we spend a lot less in this country on our Supra's than the Yanks do....and look at the Yank drag Supra's....they'd clean up at TOTB... The Skyline scene in the UK sees similar investment to the Supra scene in the US... it's all about money.
