Things that go 'whine' in the dash!?

I have a strange whine coming from my car! I am pretty convinces that it’s not the turbos. The noise, best described as a whine I think, has a lower pitch than the turbos (I can still hear the turbos and they sound fine). The whine only occurs above about 3000 rpm, it doesn’t matter which gear I’m in (even neutral!) and the load or boost levels don’t seem to make any difference either, although the pitch does seem related to engine rpm. Now the strange thing is that I can barely hear the noise when I listen under the bonnet but it’s quite loud when sitting in the car, it sounds like it’s coming from behind the dash so I suspect maybe it’s something that’s bolted to the firewall? I’ve been around and checked the hoses; all fluid levels are fine etc. I should point out that I have switched off the blower, A/C, etc. :D The car drives fine apart from this, I just can’t think what might be making such a noise when I can’t hear it from under the bonnet. Any suggestions would be welcome?

:help:

Thanks,

Richard

is your stereo on? (hear me out :D) if your stereo is powered up with the volume fully off you could get a dodgy suppression problem through the speakers. i had it once on my 300zx untill i put a ferrite core arround the power cable to the head unit.

probably not it, but worth a mension
