1st cat into 2nd cat bolts

Recommended Posts

well, my car was in to get it's 2nd cat removed today and i got a call saying there the bolts were stuck solid into the first cat and no amount of heat will loosen them up.

have been advised that they may shear off and if so i'm looking at the car being off the road for a couple of days while he gets it re-tapped. anyone else had this problem or have a possible solution?

any help appreciated. cheers.

If you meant the first cat to the turbo elbow STUDS and nuts then it's not rocket science, get them to take the turbo elbow off, and work on it on the bench. I clamp the elbow on the milling machine and accurately drill the broken studs out, and Helicoil the holes and fit new genuine Toyota stainless studs and nuts. If they heat the studs up too much, in situ, they will go pot hard, break and be a total barsteward to remove. If they are competent they should just be getting on with it, though, not mithering you :)

If they really mean the first cat to second cat BOLTS and nuts are seized, then God help us all, it's so sad as to be pathetic. I'd take it off them before they hurt themselves ;) My wife could sort them, and cook a meal at the same time.

said he'd tried to drill them through and it wouldn't work (i think).

have you drilled them through then Merckx?

Not on the Supra, but on other cars I have.

Is he talking about the first cat to turbo elbow?

At the 1st cat to 2nd cat flange you have have bolt/nuts, it doesn't matter if the they just shear off, they are easily replaced.

nope, no turbos here mate and yes Chris, it is the BOLTS between the first and second cats.....dear god.

Chris, does your wife fancy a trip to inverness?

is there anything that shows these are definitely bolts? (not doubting you guys in the slightest but don't want this guy to think that he's a complete idiot!)

For god sake if it is definitely those simple nuts and bolts they should let them shear and replace them!!

I would be worried too if my car was in there mate judging by what ive heard.

Hopefully this is what youre looking for, and if so, DEFINITELY shows its simple nuts and bolts:Exhaust.jpg

The nuts are a captive part of the little metal heat shield on some cars. You can bin the heat shield. Just get them to grind the heads off the bolts and fit new nuts and bolts (10 mm) Are they safe with an angle grinder though.... ? ;)

lol...probably not Chris after what's just been said! :D

Gonna try to pop through for a few photos and a chat mate.

Still not got my own soop yet so i'll not be along for the run, and i'll have the wee one on tow, so no doubt it'll be a case of "Dad when are we going?" every 5 mins! :dummy: lol!

But i'll do my best to be up there and catch up with the rest of the guys!

Already got the details and the route plan printed !:)
