MX5's - so what if they're fun ?!?

Welcome to the forum 'Supercharged', your balanced opinions are most worthwhile :rolleyes:

 

Out of interest how many Supra have you driven in anger before coming up with the statements you have made?

 

Oh and how many head gaskets have you been through while we are at it?

 

If you are going to use that pathetic ammo I suggest you head over to the MK3 forums, it won't cut it here I'm afraid.

The fact is with a 1.8 litre engine you can only go so far can't you. There are 1000bhp supra's about using the original engine how many Mx5's are there without an engine transplant in fact how may with 500 more to the point.

 

You cant compare a Supra to a Eunos they are different types of cars. I would be happy to go through some twisties and I bet I would be glued to your bumper all the way.

How many of you guys use the Nurburger to get to work?

 

Race? I never said anything about a race. We could easily lose you lot at legal speeds on the twisties.. no problems. On very loooong straights (once youve got that Hooj weight moving) I reckon Id be eating your dust :ok:

 

 

The 'ring is the ultimate challenge. Do you think a car fast on the 'ring won't be fast elsewhere??

 

Race, run, whatever, sounds very silly to me on public roads.

You spend most of your time on roads not tracks. I doubt you will find anything like the 'Llanberis Pass' or 'Denbigh Moors' at the nurbergring.

 

I guess my point is this - its easier to get the power spot on in a 5 than it is to get the handling spot on in a supra... Because it weighs 1640 kg

 

I do like Supras a lot - I just prefer the MX5. If I was thinking of getting a bigger, more powerful car it would be an RX-7 TT. Sweet.

 

To conclude my tour of duty:

 

We're all petrol heads so why slag off each others rides - horses for courses innit? Keep Motoring in safety peeps - but listen out for SC whine or distinct BOV the next time you see an MX5. Then you'll see how fast a girls car can go :cool:

 

Oh yeah I forgot - Black ones go faster too!

also quite a nice lack of pedestrians, and also a lack of cars coming the other way. Always good elements when looking to push a car beyond its limits.

 

A fair and safe challenge to join the guys on a run to The Ring, but perhaps 14 miles of twisties is too much for you and your car, and it means closing the salon on a Saturday which must be your busiest day (obviously jesting with ya here...just inter club banter like on the rest of the thread) :D

has to be said it would be good to perhaps meet up at a track day or similar to dispell what each of us believes to be myths. THe myth that the MX5 is just a sunshine day, top down tourer for women and the myth that the supra doesnt handle. I think there could be some surprising revelations for all.

Firstly, the 'ring is not smooth like your average track.

 

But, eirther way, the advantages work for both cars. You WANT hazards? Pedestrians? Cyclists? Diesel spills? Opposite traffic? Hardly seems right for finding the best car, more the dumbest driver.

 

I say do some trackdays over here vs a Supra, and then see what you think of the Supra. A MX5 is not a lame hairdressers car (or I would not plan to have one in the next couple of years...), but neirther is the Supra a lardy pig with poor handling. Read up on the reviews of the handling when they were launched (before they got famous for the engine).

Over the past 3 years I have owned several MR2's (mk1/MK2, N/A & Tubby), MX5 (bought for the wife 3 yrs ago) and the past year the Supra N/A.

 

Owned Large engined rear wheel drive cars, 4 wheels drive cars, sport coupes, classics the list goes on!

 

I love driving and the Supra is the car I always wanted but if you ask me what car I would rather take out for a "drive" then I'd be going for the keys for the 5!

 

If it was about getting from A>B in the fastest manner whilst looking damn cool :eyebrows: it would be the Supra, if however I wanted to take the B roads and really have some fun it would be the 5, just takes you back to basics and is a hoot to drive.

 

Answer to the thread topic, yup, the 5 is loads of fun and in some areas a lot better than the Supra but come on, the Supra.............just look at it :cool:

i have to say that i think questions like this are stupid to ask on a single marque forum. It was the same arguement on the SOC with skylines vs 200sx.

 

To the person that originally asked the question.... go and have a drive in a '5 to see what you think - then jump in a tuned FI MX5 and see what you think - thats the only way to answer your question. Personally, i have owned skylines and a 200sx - nothing massively powerful, but more so than the MX5 (stock) and i have returned to the MX5 as they are brilliant fun and so easy and relatively cheap to mod. I love supras and know that they go like stink, but would never compare to the MX5 as they are completely different cars.

Aye, i agree wiv Bobbeh, that dude in the MX-5 at the ring was wuppin arse left, right and center. The only mod's he'd doen was an induction kit and stiffer suspension - pretty feckin impressive. Infact, come to think of it, most of the real lairy cars at the ring last year were of that ilke (apart from the supras!!!:D ), i'm talking about mini's, civic's etc. Power to wieght ration plays a big factor ther, it's not just on the straights.

I've been toying with getting an MX-5 meself as a back-lane bit of fun. i've driven 'em before and they are fantastic fun, great handling and very assured grip, so dont slag 'em off untill you've tried 'em...:D

I think ignorance is bliss for some people Salvatore! :rolleyes: You'll never convince the die-hard supra crowd! Some opinions seem to be based on faith rather than fact in some cases.

 

Can anyone remember his (black mx5s) best time round the ring? How does this compare to good supra times?

Does it matter to you THAT much what the Supra crowd think:blink:

 

Like I said, I love my 5 for what it is but I much prefer my Supra but I would not be trawling about other car forums trying to enforce my point of view:rolleyes:

 

Seen the chaps on here have many sensible conversations with other marque owners but if you come on all guns blazing, you'll just piss folk off :taped:

He was probably lapping mid 8 minutes, maybe less. (UK registered car/American Driver)

 

The point is, he knew how to drive, he had the confidence to throw it around which is fair enough.

 

We were going around thinking we were going fast and having a really good time, but by no means were we driving like him.

 

So it just goes to show it doesnt matter what you're in MX5/Supra if you know what you're doing. I'm sure if he would have got into the Supra and driven like he was he'd be going even quicker, but the MX5 is a great value little track toy.
