Guest chiefvinso
I'm a free mason, although I havent practiced for a few years as I moved to the states. I was going to continue out there but there are some not recognised chapters. Alex, my way of describing freemasonry to you would be the same as what this forum is. A gathering of people with an interest. What have freemasons done for you? I dont know, but as afreemason has already said and I'm pretty sure its fact its the second largest charity contributor to camelot. Freemasonry is NOT satanic!! lol

Ceptik
Although i know its not a secret society per se, but i still think it really shouldn't be right to delcare yourself a mason/freemason on such a public board. If one does declare it by speech, what is the point of the 'secret' handshakes?
Guest chiefvinso
I too was under the impression that it was to be kept secret but I think with all the pressures and bad press they allow one to be open about it. Application forms (some) ask if you are a member of societies etc. I dont go around telling anyone but as it has popped up here it does not cause me or anyone any problems. The idea of the secret handshakes is for the people in the know, saying you are one thing and proving it is another. Only a freemason would know the password and or handshake to prove their status. On here we're all interested in Supra's. What area of common interest do masons have? So with it being a society with secrets, when do you find out about said "secrets"? I mean you may join up, and then find that some of the secrets are a little "unsavoury" for your palette. Or do you get told everything upfront? Is their a newbie mason temple? Is their a newbie mason temple? :) None of the secrets are unsavory mate I can assure you ..... the secrets of Masonry are basically the way in which one mason communicates to another the fact that they are a Mason and and what level they have progressed to within the lodge ...... today it's largely academic and as someone has already said ..... it's not so secret any more if you've got tittynet access. The common cause ....... at the risk of everyone taking the pi55 ...... it's all about trying to be a better person..... not in a elitist way but in a self development way (not unlike the scouts or guides strangely enough !!!).... giving to and working for charity, getting to know and appreciate others, learning what we call ritual (which is effectively like learning a part in a play) ..... it is supposed to cross both religious and political boundaries ..... not least as both of the imflatory topics are banned within the lodge room and the festive board (nosh up afterwards). Personally I made an advancement in Masonic knowledge today ...... I discovered how to stop and control myself from getting out of my car, ripping off the head of the twat behind me and crapping down his neck ...... there I feel like a better person already !!!!! Personally, I just believe the more people know about masonry (the secrets excepted) the less bad press we'll get. The Grand Lodge of England donated £1million to the boxing day big wave appeal (I can't spell it so get lost) immediately !!!!! Then individual provinces (typically counties) donated tens & hundreds of thousands on top ...... It was never mentioned in any papers to my knowledge ...... who the ***k is supposed to be doing our marketing eh !!!!!

Chiefgroover
Masonry is bigger and more complex than you can imagine. You do three degrees to become a Master Mason, the basic standard Mason, after which there are 30 more degrees available. However the last three are generally something you are invited to attain. Each degree has a name, e.g. The secret master degree (4th one) to which there is always a story. As is often the case it refers to ancient craft Freemasonry, it peer's like Hiram Abif, King Solomon, workmen of the forests of the lebanon etc. This particular degree teaches the virtues of secrecy, obedience, , and fidelity. Some very famous people were masons, George Washington, Mozart, William Shattner, John Wayne, most Royalty, Rudyard Kipling, Robert Burns, Joseph Haydn, Rousseau & Voltaire, Lindberg, Edwin Aldrin (first mason on the moon), Buffalo Bill (W F Cody), to name a tiny amount. Most of the Anti Masonary of today started with Leo Taxil, the arch liar of the late 1800's. A Frenchman thrown out of Masonry for poor conduct, spent years writing books accusing Masons of being a satanic cult. The books were translated into many languages and sold many making Taxil rich. In his later years he openly admitted that it was all spoof I quote him "My readers believed every outlandish yarn I put to them, ah, there is no end to human stupidity". The crazy bit is there are still writers out there making money on the back of Taxils lies thanks to the gullible public!.
TLicense
So the idea is that you help others and they help you to become better people? Nowt wrong in that I guess. So where does all this, nepotism mularky come into it? Or is that part of the fiction?

JohnA
For such an organisation, a smart practice would be to have the vast majority of members oblivious to the workings of the elite at the top. Not even know what the top ranks are, not even their existence. This is important, so that whenever 'leaks' happen (which is only human and should be expected) those people can't spill beans they know nothing about. Occult references, ceremonies and regalia would appeal to the subconsious need to feel 'part of a wider family' Redistribution and redirection of material wealth would be just a fortunate byproduct (lol) No wonder Churches of all faiths have always been very hostile against them, they regard this as their turf!
