afreemason
OK it's been a while since I last asked but it has come to my attention lately that I'm not the only Mason in the Village so to say Anybody else on here on the square and prepared to come out of the chest of draws :search: Never know we could have a masonic car meet sorted ...... maybe even an initiation ...... substituting an exhaust for the sheep ..... obviously
Scoboblio
Isn't it supposed to be a (mostly) secret society?

afreemason
Hi ..... It doesn't need to be secret really ........ !!!!! It's a commonly held mis conception that freemasonry is a secret society ..... it's not, it's a society with secrets !!!!!! Subtly secret. People can be told all about freemasonry, some of what happens behind closed doors and even be invited to some masonic social do's .... what can't & won't be disclosed are the secrets of a freemason ...... they were traditionally a manner in which a stone mason could identify to another what level of skill he had and therefore how much he would get paid (you understand that this would be when castles were built and consequently pre micro soft, cv's being e-mailed and references taken on a mobile phone !!!!!) Today they are largely irrelevant but say I was challenged to prove that I was a Mason by the two other Mason on this site (yes there's at least two others !!!!) then I could do so in the time honoured fashion known amongst masons !!!!!!! Hey tradition is tradition !!!!!! So - I don't HAVE to keep my membership secret, and as you can see, I don't !!!!! It is considered inappropriate in certain lines of work because of the public misconception about what we're all about ...... politicians while serving are discouraged from maintaining their membership for example. I wouldn't name other Masons if they didn't want to be named but if it's ok to loud proud and gay ...... I think Masonry deserves some better publicity ..... afterall we do a lot of good work for charity !!!!! Never been accused of subtle me !!!!!! JohnA
So all these 'coming out of the closet' posts are meant to convince real craftsmen that you are one of them? Did you miss the induction or something?...lol....
Pixelfill
Out of curiosity, I've always wondered who qualifies to join. Not saying I'm interested you understand, but I know someone who is a member, and it always intrigued me how someone in their profession qualified. If you see what I mean. Lewis
there is no requirement to join, simply contact your local lodge and they will talk you through what would be expected of you and what you can expect from them Do not view it as a means to an end though. Mike All religions, colours etc can join a "blue lodge" master mason level. You must be of good carachter and have reputation to match. You must also not be an atheist, or you cant do the first degree or understand the workings of the 33 degrees. First and foremost its a Charity, a point many people miss. Mike Just upright and free men of mature age, sound judgement and strict morals ...... open to certain degree of interpretation these days but basically nobody wih a criminal record or a place in the house of commens !!!!! Joining ...... a candidate should approach a mason and declare his interst rather than being press ganged ...... which is where my issue on being open comes from ..... how are we to attract new brethren if no one knows who to ask !!!!!!! Now if ford were in charge of marketing freemasonry we'd all be painted orange ...... but then that would present other problems now wouldn't it
Lewis
Ok, this secret society part is age old, it used to be a secret society of sorts but governments put play to that by making all members declare their membership when in office. It is not a secret society by definition as anybody may enter a lodge or speak with members and members may announce themselves of their own accord. However, due to the fact that there is sometimes a need to identify members outside of a closed group (such as when visiting lodges far from home), some parts are "secreT2 although with the advent of the internet it isn't hard to find things out such as the initiation rites etc - now symbolic. As with anything, the fact that masons do not shout and broadcast their traditions means that people fill in the blanks themselves and make misconceptions. afreemason
Part of the reason for asking guys is that I'm in the chair next year and one of the things I want to do is find a few lodges around the country to go visit ..... ideally with a few of the guys making it a bit of a lads night or weekend away ...... so if anyones lodge could do with some reprobates maybe coming to visit then ....... ..... particularly one in Burns country for Jan ??????? Don't know about ages but I'm 35 so I'd like to think it;s not an old man's game which it the other misconception !!!!!! And I'm in RA & KT too !
