lovatt
take it to a good garage and they will do a compression test or use that blue dye stuff (very technical ) do a search for blown head gasket and see if you have any of the symptoms

Steve W
if it's losing it THAT fast, you'd SEE the steam out of the exhaust QUITE EASILY ! ! ! a little water creates a LOT of steam ! ! (the ones that come into us have LOADSA steam-from-exhaust and they're NOT losing it THAT fast ! !) Gas-Test (Blue Dye) on rad for combustion gases. Pressure test on rad/system for unseen leaks. (it may only leak under 'running' pressure, pumping the system up to ~11/12/13 psi simulates 'driving'). [and, YES, Steve's right... if it's POSITIVE it's GONE... if it's NEGATIVE it STILL may have gone.. doesn't ALWAYS show up pressure-test won't show water going INTERNALLY, ie. into bores/sump etc except if the actual 'pressure' drops rapidly-ish]

Well it wouldn't be the first time a HG has gone on a MKIV if it has, but it is VERY rare. No idea on cost, but there is no need for anything other than a Toyota OEM one. Steve Cargill
I think it is quoted as 12 hours labour, but that is without getting the head checked and skimmed. As Thorin says, the Toyota one is fine.
Guest Terry S
Kevlar eh! not seen one of those for the MKIV. The stock one is steel and pretty bomb proof.
Adam W
Damp block sounds more like a ruptured coolant pipe to me, any water will be escaping into the cylinder or being forced out of the system by exhaust gas pressure. If it had blown so bad that there was a path between the coolant jacket and the side of the block you would see bits of gasket hanging out the side of the engine and it probably wouldn't fire on that cylinder (no compression).
