Tom
Doh!! I found out today that I will definately be losing my job very soon, maybe even this week! I'm still desperately trying to find out what I want to do with my life, and it's pretty difficult to figure out at the moment, I may go off to OZ for a year or two in september but I know I'll have the same problem once I get back and by then I'll be 23/24 and still have no direction!!! A couple of careers that I could see my self doing would be being a photographer or car journalist(that would be the ultimate!) but I feel I've left it waaaay too late to go these routes. I do have another plan of setting up my own business involved with cars but the way the market is at the moment it's not looking like a realistic option. does anyone have any advice they can give me?? I'd also love to do photography. I'm doing a journo course at college so i'm hoping to combine the two, fashion photography or something similar. Who knows i may end up as one of the 'paps' that all the celebs hate!!

Kip
Have a mate that is heavily in to Photography in fact I would say his work is brilliant, he has had galleries take it on etc. and has allot of admiration from other top guys, yet he is finding it really difficult to break in to the big time. Create your own destiny and just do it, all the time you are talking about what you may or may not do is wasted time. Pick a subject and run with it. Ive had 3 career changes in the past 15 years and I haven't regretted one of them. That's my advice - just do it - whats the worst that can happen?? Supragal
one of the worst is that you can end up not earning anythingm oweing huge amount, losing everything you own. That kinda thing.

Supragal
Ahh, now I am not an optomist... or overly negative. I prefer "realist". Rarely disappointed that way

MARTIN R
I reckon you can change career at anytime. Its more dependant on finances. I am waiting on the outcome of an interview, if I dont get it I reckon its time for a new direction. Good luck in what ever you decide mate

Kip
Supragal, making life changing decisions isn't easy I know and I feel sure your allot younger than me. One doesn't have to lose everything and I like to think I too am a realist, however - by the quote "whats the worst that can happen" I didn't mean for you to go down the pessimist route. I meant whats the worst that can happen - you don't like it so move on to the next venture....where's your sense of adventure? Youve got a whole life ahead of you to explore, make the leap now or you never will..... Best regards - great grandad Kip!
Green Peace
Tom... The best advice i can give you is... ...wear sunscreen Seriously 23 is still very very young on the career's ladder. I was on a couple of media courses in my early twenties and the oldest person on one of my courses was 38 years old! The best way I have always found to deceide what I wanted to do..rather than just signing up for a course, is to 'Shadow' a photographer (or whoever)for a few days.. I.E. help them set up, carry gear etc, obviously you want to find one who specialises in the Automotive media! I did some shadowing at the Beeb and used to help news cameramen, wanted to be a cameraman but ended up in those days as a Freelance News and Doc Sound Recordist...so it kind of payed off...There is no experience like REAL experience, and of course you meet all the right contacts that way. Forget the 'who you know' or 'what you know' the best qaulification for any job is pure enthusiasm and flare.... Two phrases that i live by are.... 'Keep it simple' 'Ignorance minus Influence...equals Originality' ok ok so it hasn't quite worked this end ....yet
jim_supra
Am in pretty much the same boat as you mate, I was made redundant almost a year ago. not nice but it happens. I took it as an opportunity to set up a small car sales business. nothing too big, just something to keep a bit of money coming in. but some months this can be very slow!! I also took a trip round Oz for a few months, which IMO was well worth it, I didn't work while I was out there, but met lots of people who did. They were working on ranches, fruit picking, bar work, allsorts! I'm so glad I did this as if I didn't do it when I had the chance, I knew it was something I wouldn't be able to do for many years to come, as i will no doubt be tied into a mortgage, things like that. I was worried about work for when I came back, but don't think I left it too late to get a career sorted either, have just been offered a good job which i can build a decent career from. I would also say do some research, see what's involved in getting into your preferred career, that way you will know for sure wether you've got time to travel etc. good luck, whatever you decide

terribleturner
I'd also love to do photography. I'm doing a journo course at college so i'm hoping to combine the two I did Radio and Journalism at college I've got 51 days to go till im made redundant and have no idea what i wanna do. My main thinking is that i will do what ever i have to as long as the bills get paid. Specially if it doesn't involve nights

Can't decide between which 'media' to go into really. Love photography the most i think though so hopefully i'll be able to get into that. Good luck with finding something.
