Need4Speed
tatty NA for £2-3K and rip it apart for track day useTrack days need a decently prepared car; not race spec, but decent. You'll need good brakes, all suspension/steering components in good order, and a decent set of tyres. Just stripping a car out doesn't make it suitable for track days. lust2luv
Well NA brakes aren't the best, but with the weight reduction, decent pads and fluid they might last a few laps at a time. I'm assuming you wouldn't pick a car with dodgy suspension in the first place. When I say tatty, I mean ripped interior, stained carpet, slight body imperfections. Tyres are hardly a big expense, and you're not gonna get very far doing track days without investing in rubber.
JohnA
That's true actually, marginal brakes and suspension become pretty adequate if enough weight has been shaved off. I'm curious, what is the lowest weight people have achieved on a supra shell?
lust2luv
That's what I'm curious about. The Americans strip a lot out for drag racing, but they're often starting with aerotops to begin with, so not a great starting point. My SZR weighed in at 1397kg with half a tank of gas and nothing removed - other than the cats (and it has electric drivers seat and active spoiler, which must weigh a fair bit). If you could get it down to 1100kg it would be interesting - not sure how feasible that is, and there's no way I'm trying it.
Guest mentalfx
How much does the standard spoiler weigh? Surely that's a good place to start loosing weight.
lust2luv
The rear spoiler is deceptively light - I think it's hollow?
Alex
N/A's require RPM's or CC's to make more power it's as simple as that. It's an air pump you need to get as much in and out as possible. Rebuilt head, lighter pistons and rods and a 9,000rpm rev limit (cams and lift matched to it) and you'll get more power. Going for higher compression is anotrher trick (but you have to be careful, and expect to use SUL only from then on)
Keith C
Faye decatted. Faye's car now achieved a good few mph higher speed along a certain piece of road than it ever did before. Bhp numbers, theory, blah blah - all irrelevant. The car is now measurably faster for a consistent test than it was before.
ChrisSZ
How much does the standard spoiler weigh? Surely that's a good place to start loosing weight. The rear spoiler is actually quite light! It is (as someone else mentioned) hollow - removing it would decrease drag though.
JohnA
....and let's face it, a n/a doesn't desperately need the extra downforce now, does it?
Keith C
Not compared to a lardy auto UK-spec
JohnA
He he...the UKSpec has extra weight (sorry, downforce) from the additional radiators, bigger brakes, leather etc. I can live with that....
lust2luv
Why would an NA not be able to corner as fast as a TT?
JohnA
It's the speeds involved that can be higher. The rear spoiler doesn't do much below a ton, anyway.
Keith C
He he...the UKSpec has extra weight (sorry, downforce) from the additional radiators, bigger brakes, leather etc. I can live with that.... Oh we do. Every day. We have two Supra's in this household remember
JohnA
A household to be proud of!
Keith C
It also gives us a unique perspective on the NA vs TT debate. Faye can get along a twisty country road a *lot* faster than I can...
lust2luv
Yeah, but how much time do you spend over 150mph?
JohnA
It also gives us a unique perspective on the NA vs TT debate. Faye can get along a twisty country road a *lot* faster than I can... Throttle response on a turbo will always be worse. So if you pick a track where that is the deciding factor then you have your answer.
